Nevermind is the second studio album by the Americanrock band Nirvana, released on September 24, 1991. Produced by Butch Vig, Nevermind was the group's first release on Geffen Records, which signaled its move away from Seattle-based independent record labelSub Pop. Front man Kurt Cobain sought to make music outside of the restrictive confines of the Seattle grunge scene, drawing influence from groups such as the Pixies and its use of loud/quiet song dynamics. Nevermind was a surprise success by late 1991, largely due to the success of its lead single "Smells Like Teen Spirit". By January 1992 it had replaced Michael Jackson's album Dangerous at number one on the Billboard charts. Nevermind was responsible for bringing alternative rock to a large mainstream audience, and would subsequently be regarded as one of the best rock albums of all time
With my 7th round selection, I would like to select, originally from West Ruislip, London, the group America in the UKcategory.
America is an English-Americanfolk rock band, originally composed of members Gerry Beckley, Dewey Bunnell, and Dan Peek. The three members were barely past their teenage years when they became an overnight musical sensation in 1972. They reached a peak in popularity in the early to mid 1970s and early 1980s. Among the band's best known songs are "A Horse with No Name," "Sister Golden Hair" (both of which reached Number 1), "Ventura Highway," and "Tin Man". Although their music was frequently derided by critics, from a commercial standpoint the band's singles and albums were exceptionally successful. They were popular enough to attract the services of famed BeatlesproducerGeorge Martin for a run of seven albums. The band survived the loss of one of its original members near the peak of its success only to see Beckley and Bunnell return the act to the top of charts as a duo with "You Can Do Magic" in 1982. Consistently touring for well over three decades, America still maintains a strong following and performs over 100 shows per year. On January 16, 2007, America released Here & Now, the band's first major labelstudio album in over twenty years.
XTC was one of the smartest — and catchiest — British pop bands to emerge from the punk and new wave explosion of the late '70s. From the tense, jerky riffs of their early singles to the lushly arranged, meticulous pop of their later albums, XTC's music has always been driven by the hook-laden songwriting of guitarist Andy Partridge and bassist Colin Moulding. While popular success has eluded them in both Britain and America, the group has developed a devoted cult following in both countries that remains loyal over two decades after their first records.

The members of XTC hate the adjective "quirky"; it's been used too often by critics and others trying to capture the elusive sound of this maverick English band. Fronted by Andy Partridge, a bookish singersongwriter-guitarist who prefers a domestic life in the British countryside to the urban frenzy of rock stardom and has a morbid fear of live performance, and sporting another talented singer-songwriter in bassist Colin Moulding, the group has escaped critical pigeonholes since its inception in 1976. Despite a lack of major sales, chronic difficulties with producers, and an out-right refusal to tour since 1982, the band has cultivated a reputation as one of the best songwriter-oriented pop bands around.
I think America is one of those bands that could fit in both categories, but the commish I ain't!

With the 7th Round Pick (132nd) Hanna Sniper's EC and the G-String Band, selects in the “USA East of Mississippi” category, from Columbus, Georgia Robert Cray
Quote:
Cray started playing guitar in his early teens. At Denbigh High School in Newport News, Virginia, his love of blues and soul music flourished as he started collecting records. Originally, Robert Cray wanted to become an architect, but at about the same time he was going to study design in architecture he formed a local band "Steakface", described as "the best band from Lakewood you never heard of". Cray on guitar and vocals contributed greatly to Steakface's set list of songs by Jimi Hendrix, Quicksilver Messenger Service, Fleetwood Mac, The Grease Band, Blodwyn Pig, Jethro Tull, Spirit and The Faces.
By the time he was twenty, Cray had seen his heroes Albert Collins, Freddie King and Muddy Waters in concert, and decided to form his own band. His band started playing college towns on the West Coast. After several years of regional success, Cray was signed to Mercury Records in 1982. His third album release, Strong Persuader, received a Grammy Award, while the crossover single "Smokin' Gun" gave him wider appeal and name recognition. By now, Cray was an opening act for major stars, such as Eric Clapton (who remains a friend to this day), and sold out larger venues as a solo artist. By the early 1990s his name was immediately associated with his soothing, soulful voice, crisp, clean guitar work, and innovative modern blues sound.
Cray also had the opportunity to play alongside John Lee Hooker, on his album Boom Boom. Cray plays the guitar solo in the song "Same Old Blues Again". He is also featured on the critically acclaimed album, The Healer, another recording from John Lee Hooker. Cray plays a guitar solo on the song "Baby Lee".
Cray was invited to play at the "Guitar Legends" concerts in Seville, Spain at the Expo in 1992, where amongst others, he played a signature track "Phone Booth", wowing the audience. Also on the bill on this blues night of the "Legends" gigs was Albert Collins

Thanks DFF
I seen Robert Cray at the Phoenix in Toronto, the Phoenix was a converted old movie threatre with the seats removed. So it was just general standing room attendance. When I got there I scoop the front and center spot. It was the first time I walked away from a gig with total amazement with the strength and control of his hands.
Outside of David Gilmour's April 10ths show in 06, I would have to say the was the best performance I've every seen... singing, playing and overall stage presence.

As MonsieurFish's 7th round pick, I am pleased to select, in the Keyboard/Piano Player category, from The Doors, one of the greatest bands of all times: Ray Manzarek
Ray Manzarek is of Polish descent, born and raised on the South Side of Chicago, as were his parents. Growing up, he took private piano lessons from Bruno Michelotti and others. He went to Everett Elementary School on S. Bell St. and attended St. Rita High School in Chicago. He majored in economics at DePaul University. [1]
In 1962-65, he studied in the Department of Cinematography at UCLA, where he met another film student named Jim Morrison. Forty days after finishing film school, thinking they had gone their separate ways, they met by chance. Morrison said he had written some songs, and Manzarek expressed an interest in hearing them, whereupon Morrison sang a rough version of "Moonlight Drive."
In January 1966, The Doors became the house band at a club on the Sunset Strip called The London Fog. According to Manzarek, "Nobody ever came in the place...an occasional sailor or two on leave, a few drunks. All in all it was a very depressing experience, but it gave us time to really get the music together." The same day The Doors were fired from The London Fog, they were hired to be the house band of the Whisky a Go Go. Their first performance at the Whisky was with the group Them[2].
The Doors' first recording contract was with Columbia Records. After a few months of inactivity, they learned they were on Columbia's drop list. At that point they asked to be released from their contract. After a few months of live gigs, Jac Holzman "rediscovered" the Doors and signed them to Elektra Records.
Manzarek's playing with The Doors made him one of the most influential rock keyboardists ever, raising the level of virtuosity a keyboardist is expected to have. The Doors lacked a bassist, so Manzarek usually played the bass parts on a FenderRhodes piano Bass. His signature sound is that of the Vox Continental organ, an instrument used by many other psychedelic rock bands of the era. He later used a Gibson G-101 Kalamazoo (which looks like a Farfisa) because the Italian Continental keys "sticked" and remained "down" without pushing it.
Manzarek occasionally sang for The Doors, with a voice more bluesy than rock, including the live recordings of "Close To You," "Who Do You Love," and "Tightrope Ride." He also sang on the last two Doors albums, recorded after Morrison's death, Other Voices and Full Circle.
On August 4th, 2007, Manzarek hosted a program on BBC Radio 2 about the 40th anniversary of the recording of "Light My Fire" and the group's musical and "spiritual" influences.
Jim Morrison Tribute: (love this song, Ray is such a pimp)
Love the pick Hanna, Robert Cray really is a very underrated guitarist. I heard him live when he opened for Clapton....I would have paid to see just him, great performer.
Neon Dion and the Iggy Pops select in the UK category, Judas Priest.
Judas Priest are a heavy metal band formed in 1970 in Birmingham. Judas Priest's core line-up consists of bass player Ian Hill, vocalist Rob Halford and guitarists Glenn Tipton and K.K. Downing. They have been cited as an influence on many heavy metal musicians and bands. Their popularity and status as one of the definitive heavy metal bands has earned them the nickname "Metal Gods", from their song of the same name.[1] They have sold over 35 million albums worldwide.
