I have started reading War and Peace. Joined a subreddit r/ayearofwarandpeace to get through it.

If you like mainstream fiction, avoid the newest john Grisham book "The Reckoning" . it's complete rubbish.

Have you ever wondered what you’d do if you were sent back in time? Wonder now longer. With HOW TO INVENT EVERYTHING, you’ll have all the science, art, engineering, philosophy, math, and music required to build a technological civilization - from scratch - all on your own. It’s the hilarious, educational, and awesome new book from Ryan North (from Dinosaur Comics, Squirrel Girl, Adventure Time, and more)

I have often wondered how I would invent stuff if I was sent back in time. I remember a TED talk about what it took for a guy to build a toaster from scratch, trying to obtain and process all the raw materials himself. It was a very difficult task, and his toaster really sucked. So much is dependent upon not just having the knowledge, but having the evolved system of commerce, trade and division of skills and labor that enables people.

Anyways, my interest is definitely piqued for that book.

Necro this thread for the deal.

Actually, are people still able to read a book anymore? Or are people's attention spans destroyed along with their finances in 2025?

When I was a teenager that would have been a great deal - not really what I'd read now though. They do have some great book bundles on Humble Bundle sometimes though. I keep hoping we'll get the Terry Pratchett bundle in Canada, it has appeared a few times but only for the US.

I’m reading the second book in the Expanse series right now. Calaban’s War.

Just finished John Douglas’ Mindhunter. Douglas is the father of criminal profiling. His book inspired the Netflix series of the same name. It’s the best thing Netflix has ever done. I’ve watched it twice and will again. I haven’t started my next book yet but have completed 11 so far this year, reading and ebooks.

I'm broke. I bought this. I'm more broke now. However, I'm rich because I'm reliving fond childhood memories. It came just before Christmas and I finally started to read it this weekend. There is 155 issues in the main series, plus a couple side series too. I had all but 2 issues from the first 65 issues and missed a few up to issue 78, so my collection was incomplete. I always wondered where the story went and now I finally get to find out!

This is me, but I'm still halfway through book 3 on my re-read. Problem is I have a bunch of other books I'm trying to read too! The Southern Reach trilogy, Shogun, and then maybe I finish up Stormlight for now.

Quote:
The Mote in God's Eye is a science fiction novel by American writers Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle, first published in 1974. The story is set in the distant future of Pournelle's CoDominium universe, and charts the first contact between humanity and an alien species. The title of the novel is a reference to the Biblical "The Mote and the Beam" parable and is the nickname of a star. The Mote in God's Eye was nominated for the Hugo, Nebula and Locus Awards in 1975.

Ece Temelkuran’s 2019 How to Lose a Country is a breakdown of how democracies unravel, using Turkey as a warning for Britain and the States.

She outlines the steps populists use to dismantle institutions, manipulate truth, and divide societies. It's an interesting read for anyone who wants to understand the US right now.

I really liked the first book of the Southern Reach trilogy, but struggled to get into the other two (especially the 2nd one).

I've got the first 4 Stormlight books but haven't started them yet, was waiting for the first arc to be finished so probably OK for me to start now.

That's exactly where I'm struggling with the Southern Reach trilogy too! I may try to power through, or perhaps I pivot to Shogun and then Stormlight and come back to it later?

Mostly been a non-fiction guy, but have branched out and started making my way through this list https://www.theatlantic.com/books/ar...iction/677479/

I've read some of the popular ones but if any are on it that y'all love, let me know. I don't want to go in order of publish date, so have just been jumping around.

Fahrenheit 451, Catch-22, and Blood Meridian are where I would start, assuming you read Charlotte's Web as a kid.

Had read 451 and Catch-22 earlier but finished Blood Meridian earlier in the year, it sure was something
