Largely depends on where you're staying and where you're sitting.
Generally the metro is the only real way to get in and out. It can be crazy slow on Sat/Sun. Like an hour wait to get on at least. But there are some other options (uber, ferry, bike). I've only ever done metro though.
If you're staying on the south shore and are sitting in GS 11 or 12, you can now use the victoria bridge entrance.
If you're in GS 11 or 12 or in the main grandstand on the pit straight, be prepared for tons of walking.
If you have GA, it's very limited in good places to watch so show up early if you want a good spot.
They published a visitor guide you may find helpful. Even has entry spots for the post race track invasion.

Post race, I recommend walking the track even if you're way down at the hairpin. The metro is so busy it's better to hang out for a while.
There's a transit strike this week but not Fri/Sat/Sun. If you're there on Wed or Thurs plan accordingly. Or if you plan on taking public transit to the airport on Monday. There's either no service or reduced service at certain times of day.
Make sure you have your metro pass purchased ahead of time!! Buy a weekend pass. Do not get caught trying to buy one when leaving the track. It takes long enough to leave without waiting in another line.
Also, keep an eye on r/grandprixtravel. Tons of threads on Montreal with good advice.

After a bit of a debacle last year, they say they're going to make things more efficient and user friendly this year. Nevertheless, be prepared, show up early, expect long lines and busy corridors. It's an island and can get very tight with numerous bottlenecks.
Bring or buy a seat cushion. The metal bleachers are hard.
I could add a million other things but honestly, most is fairly straightforward. Signage is decent so you shouldn't get lost. And that guide I posted above has some good tips. They have an app too that has an interactive map.

I don't think there's anything nefarious about going up against Indy. I think F1 just doesn't care. It'll hurt their NA audience but won't have much of an effect in europe.
