Looks like Collaros returns for Winnipeg vs the Stamps this week. And Dickenson was on Sportstalk with Jock Wilson on QR 77 Monday night. He basically said that Jake is the QB and that on every play there is at least one receiver running a deeper route.

Maybe they are running a deepish route on every play....but JFC if you don't...you know....actually throw the ball deep more than once a game, what freakin difference does it make?

I don't like hearing that from him because it implies that the short game is the way....and to a big point, it is. The whole league is going the same way, but the successful teams take shots...all 60 minutes.

He had a wrist issue that caused him to fail the first physical. It must be the same issue again.

Sounds like it’s just to open up the underneath game.

Plus we run so many WR screens.

Jake sucks. But the play calling and scheme isn’t much better, just seems like it’s built to cater to a QB they don’t trust.

Yeah you have to throw deep a few times a game if only to keep defenses honest and they actually did that in the first few games but things have regressed back to the same offense they ran last season. There have been way too many games over the past few seasons where opposing defenses have been all over the short/intermediate passes because they don't respect the Stamps ability to go deep.

Who invented the RPO? Flutie said Damon Allen did it before anyone in the US.

“All that RPO stuff, that started with Damon Allen, (Pro Football Hall of Fame running back) Marcus Allen’s younger brother, who was in Edmonton. We ran all our run game out of gun and Damon was eyeing the backside end and pulling the ball, running naked off it if he closed down,” he told podcast host and former New England Patriots receiver Julian Edelman.

“I was like, ‘Hey, I can do that.’ Then I did it and I’d get five, seven yards and the corner or someone would come off of the slot or whatever to make the tackle. I’m like, ‘Screw that, you run a fade, you run an out. If he comes off, I’m throwing you the ball.’ And we started doing this stuff.”

Everyone from Texas high school coaches to Hall of Fame QB Brett Favre has claimed a role in inventing the RPO, though most American experts credit the innovation to Rich Rodriguez, who first introduced the concept at Glenville State in the early 1990s and perfected it the following decade at West Virginia. However, Canadian fans and former CFL players have long suggested they did it first.

Maybe, and Rodriguez took it from the triple option offense and modified it in terms of how the zone read works.


Honestly what Allen did is not a pure RPO offense. The triple option was created in the 60's in Houston by Bill Yeoman. And I know that he had schemed the pass out of the option, when the QB decided to keep, the receivers on the QB option side would go into scramble rules, so the QB could keep or throw the break.


I used to have his playbook, because at one point I wanted to see if I could install the Triple Option at the Bantam level, but it was next to impossible.



The main problem with the pass element of the triple option was that for the most part the Oline plays the run and goes down field, which was illegal at the time, so you had to modify your line responsible to what would be an aggressive zone pass block.









What Flutie and Allan are describing is more of a ride and decide option package with a receiver break. Its really a single play RPO.



Its not as effective as it used to be because Ends have become so much more diciplined in what they're doing.



Also what I've found is that nowadays most of these packages have gone away from reading the end and have gone to reading the outside linebacker on the run side.
