I mean this trade still happens if the Flames were able to sign Gaudreau and Tkachuk.
May have been even more salary dumped and more assets given up if that were the case.

It’s unfortunate the James Neal signing continues to haunt the Flames as the contract indirectly results in the loss of a 1st round pick. Without Lucic’s contract still on the books they wouldn’t have had to make this deal.

TLDR: if we don't have Florida's 2025 pick, then the habs could get our 2025 pick if its 2nd to 10th

Yeah, I thought it was top 10 protected throughout

Right? I'm not in the room negotiating, but the whole piece reads like there was sensitivity to giving up a top pick, and then there is that clause that you can drive a truck through and potentially lose 2nd overall!

Damn it’s a hard price to pay for 1 yr of Monahan.

Montreal might have only done it if they got a chance at fluke high pick

I was somewhat ok with the deal until I read the conditions
Now I am depressed on what it can be. All the advantages go to Montreal

Brad said they had Kadri basically done for a week...this was obviously the best way to clear over 6M. Not ideal but a late first is rarely anything special

Brad talked about the conditions for so long that by the time he was finished, the Coyotes had switched back to their old logo.

It’s really Tkachuk and Monahan for Huberdeau, Kadri, Weegar and Schwindt

But at the end of the day the Flames traded from an excess of 1sts, thanks to the Tkachuk trade. They'll still have five 1sts in the next five years, barring further moves.

People upset with this trade don't understand the value of cap space, that's why I found it annoying when people said the Flames lost Gaudreau for nothing. No they didn't, they gained $10.5 million in cap to spend elsewhere.
