Sutter needs to bring in a guest coach for times like these.

I don't really care about preseason results but it's a little worrisome that Gudbranson looked every bit as bad as advertised. This is what worried me about Darryl having influence over the roster. I just hope that he's not going to be stubborn with this guy and keeps him in the pressbox when warranted by bad play.

lol I hate to break it to you, but you must have a bad memory. There wasn’t any preseason games last season

I knew better than to attend last night and gave my tickets away. Going Wednesday vs Seattle.
My issue is that as a season ticket holder the Flames charge regular season prices.
I would suggest:
1) Charge pre season prices for pre season games.
2) Play the pre season in third party cities that don't have NHL.
3) Not charge for the pre sesaon and give the tickets away for free, recouping the cost during the regular season and playoffs.
4) Make it optional to get pre season tickets, like they do with playoff tickets. .
Fire away.

The concerning piece is the inability to move the puck up the ice from what is effectively our bottom-4 everyday NHL defenceman, but it was also what we (should have) expected to see given who is in those spots. Gudbranson and Zadarov are both outright bad at moving the puck forward, and that cratered the team last night.
Hopefully Pitlick isn't out long-term, because I do like the potential of a Dube - Backlund - Pitlick as a 3rd line. Dube's speed was notable last night.
Hard not to be very impressed with Vladar last night. I also thought Werner looked quite good.
...I am afraid of the damage that Gudbranson and Zadarov will do to the team's ability to drive play.
|
I think Zadorov will be okay and brings a level of intimidation.
I agree on Gudbranson though. I think Stone should be the 6th d-man

Isn't the Flames approach pretty much what every NHL team does?
Not disagreeing with your suggestions, but it is a league wide thing not a Flames thing right?

As a season ticket holder, what the Flames “charge” you for pre season games depends entirely on you
For me, I divided my annual total by 41, and pre season games were free

Oh well, would’ve been nice to get the big 2 points against division rivals, even 1 point to stay in the playoff hunt. But at least we held McDavid off the scoresheet.

And I didn't see Mangiapane fall over once. More silver linings!

Simon wasn’t on the Flames two years ago.
I agree with you, there is no reason to panic over the first pre-season game I just found it funny that you chose an example that literally doesn’t exist.

The pre-season games are like staged fights. The home team dresses a stronger lineup and shows the fans who have been anxiously waiting how good the team they put together in the off season actually will be.
The visiting team does not need to put on a show. They dress the required number of NHL players and let their kids get some NHL exposure.
Last night the Flames dress 6 out of the 12 forwards that are expected to be in the opening lineup, 4 of the 6 d-men in the opening lineup and the NHL level backup goalie. 7 forwards on one-way NHL contracts and 5 d-men
The Flames dressed Zaradov, Gudbrandson, Pitlick, Lewis and Richardson and Vladar. That is 6 of their 7 off season NHL additions that are pretty sure of being on the NHL roster. Coleman was the only of the new guys who has yet to skate in front of the Flames crowd.
The shiny new guys... Pelletier and Philips and Mackey were all put on display
On the other hand the Washington Generals dress 3, maybe 4 forwards that will be in their top-12 and 1 maybe 2 D-man out of their top-6. No goalie that is expecting to play in the NHL this year.
Cap hit of the Flames line up last night 35.3 The Oilers 13.5 plus 4 guys without contracts Sceviour, Hamblin, Cracknell and Bourgault
The Harlem Globetrotters might have given a refund on a performance equal to what the Home Town Flames gave last night,

Get used to that. It’s what happens when you ice a lineup of no-talent thugs against a team that’s there to play hockey.

Just a perspective on how incredibly bad the Flames were.
They had 2 captain candidates dressed in the line-up and they came out totally flat and got any pride they had trampled by an AHL team.
It wasn't like a good team with equal or better talent got the jump on them and then it just got away.
The recent history of the Flames is to mail in games to teams that they think are not worthy of them bring their A game. That Oiler team should have been asking for selfies of all the NHL stars they were playing against.
The good thing is that Sutter now has a starting point. That should be the worst effort of the year. I can't imagine Sutter putting up with this sort of thing for very long.
If that wasn't a Kick in the butt to the Flames organization then it is going to be a long season and the Flames might be picking high in the 2022 draft.

I see you prefer option 3.
My preference would be to not have to be forced to buy/take tickets for exhibition games.
As one poster suggested the exhibition games should be like the Harlem Globetrotters versus the Washington Generals. Let the kids and wannabees, tweeners play on the road.

You know what? I ain't even mad anymore when young guys don't play well in the preseason, or don't play like they want to earn a pro spot. In fact, I welcome it. If I was a coach, I would literally have them in my office the next day and straight up thank them with a smile for doing part of my job for me, before handing them their bus ticket back to Stockton. Hell, I'd even be tempted to high-five them on the way out of my office.
Hopefully when they come back next year, they'll treat Game 1 of the preseason like they're interviewing for a job they really want, instead of just showing up and expecting someone to take a chance on them.

I'm still at a loss as to why people think Sutter will yield drastically different results than any of the coaches prior, except for Ward, who was clearly in over his head. This group is unwilling to give it their all on a consistent basis and they aren't going to suddenly put it together now. We may see a few weeks of it here or there (what else is new) but in the grand scheme of things it's a safe bet the team starts poorly, regroups before crashing again or vice versa.
Even in the 1st in the west season a few years ago, the team couldn't keep it together and reverted to their normal selves from March onwards. This group is what it is and that's simply underwhelming.
