.916 is NHL average. That's what they acquired, that's what he is.
The rest is tiresome hyperbole

Aren't those numbers confirming his point that he's nothing but a middling/average goalie his whole career?

Thanks for the first bit, but I don't agree on stats vs claiming superiority over viewing hockey on others.
I don't make the stats up in any way. Presenting stats is an objective entry into a passionate conversation. Suggesting you have an edge in frequency or ability to view hockey is trying to win arguments with fluff.

I think we all need to take a step back and recognize the fact that the Edmonton Oilers have once again won the NHL preseason by a landslide. And we all know what is likely to come next.

Go back and look for words like average.
You won't see them.

lol
Flames were CLEARLY the better team. Three fortunate bounces for the Oilers dictated the results, but not the flow.

Weird game tonight. Flames probably deserved a better fate. But I’d rather these bad games happen in the preseason then In the regular season. Mike Smith did not have a good game this entire preseason unfortunately.
Hopefully that changes on Wednesday, but there’s something about this guy and giving up a lot of goals when the workload is small. But when he faces a lot of shots, he looks unbeatable. Must be a concentration thing.

No big deal.
There were some positives. The PP looked good for stretches, Lindholm is a strong two-way threat, the youngsters don't look out of place.
Now the real games begin.
Will be interesting to see who made the final cuts

Are you under the impression that new era was calling Smith average?
If he were, he wouldn't have been called out by multiple posts, but his post was nothing but hyperbole.

.916 was 16th among goalies with at least 35 starts. You're saying Smith is average, he saying he's middling. . . . Is there really a big gulf between your positions that makes his eyeroll worthy?

That team is going to live and die by McDavid and Talbot. Doubled up their SOG’s but still lost. Also here’s some standings from last year’s preseason standings (division place):
Edmonton (1st)
Chicago (2nd)
Islanders (1st)
Vancouver (2nd)
Florida (2nd)
Carolina (3rd)
Winnipeg (7th)
Washington (8th)
Pittsburgh (7th)
Nashville (5th)
San Jose (5th)
Tampa (6th)
Let those losers have their preseason banner. Turned out so well last year.

No he wasn't. His last shift was at the end of the second.
The players out at the end of the game were: Lindholm, Gaudreau, Bennett, Dube, Andersson, and Giordano.

Wyshynski of ESPN had Flames goaltending ranked 24th coming into season. Differences between stats vs. eye test, analytical posters vs. emotional posters aside, some others have Flames goaltending below average.
Seems undeniable that Smith was above average for early part of season but also seems like common sense to be concerned if that can be expected over this whole season.
Average goaltending for 50 games or so may not be good enough for this team. It is a legitimate concern.

Oh I know you don’t agree on the eye test lol that was the whole point of my post. It’s just that new era clearly feels his eyes have merit and watching you guys argue about it at every opportunity just seems like a waste of both of your talents.
Anyways I’ll leave it at that, you aren’t the first two to have a feud on this board and I’m sure you won’t be the last

I think most would agree that goaltending is the biggest concern going into the regular season.

Weird game. Same as in SJ we saw what the Flames are capable of for roughly half the game with an impressively quick attack and great passing. Then a couple softies undo it all and the team's resolve sags away. Smith served it up on a platter more than the Oilers earned a win which is still concerning. But the Oilies love the preseason so much that it was destiny.
Flames looked like they had the much better group of skaters despite missing markedly better players than the opposition, Talbot looked more competent in net over 60 minutes.
Special teams and goaltending are the recurring question marks for the team.
