Ryan Leslie @ryanleslie73
Spoke with Tkachuk who is training with Smith in Ontario. Says he's true difference maker...
Ryan Leslie @ryanleslie73
(2/2)..Tkachuk mentioned Dvorak told him Smith is like another player back there with way he handles the puck. Will help Flames D big time.

Would have lost a 3rd if we traded or signed Elliott.
Hickey was looking like he was gonna walk anyways - could still walk on the Yotes.
Elliott is no doubt looking for more money than 4.25 and more term than 2 years.
See Roof-daddy's post
This is a great trade and is exactly the stop gap we needed in the goalie position. Gillies/Rittich/Parsons one of these guys should be pushing for the backup this year and hopefully starter in the following year.

Mike Smith and Brian Elliott are pretty much the same level of goalie that is a fact.

I guess you don't know what the word fact means lol

The facts show Smith did more last year with a far worse team, can play the puck and is signed for the optimal number of years. After watching the playoff performance if you are happy to bring elliott back then you should at least give Smith a chance.
|
Neither are an impact on a game both Smith and Elliott are interchangeable. The only thing and repeat the only thing is Smith has more games as a starter.
This is a lead pipe for lead a lead pipe not a brick of gold..

So we have our third rounder back in this draft then instead of giving it to St. Louis because of Elliott, and now it's been traded to Phoenix?

Relax. We have a good team. We aren't in our window yet... we are a playoff team. This is our first step after the rebuild. If we reach the contender stage it likely isn't for another 3 years.

How long is this rebuild if we won't reach the contender stage until 3 years from now?! Johnny and Monahan are no longer value contracts. I don't think Treliving will see out the rebuild if he was planning on needing 6-7 years.

Mike Smith and Brian Elliott are not pretty much the same level of goalie. Mike Smith has stolen games for his team because of the poor defense in front of him. Brian Elliott has played behind stellar defense in front of him and didn't steal any games last year. Brian cost the Flames games last year with soft goals even during his winning streak he gave up soft goals. Mike Smith can handle the puck and will help the defensemen. Brian Elliott was brutal last year causing so many giveaways in his zone.

Arizona gets their 2018 pick, not this year.

All I can get
|
Not sure I like this deal.
Hickey's nice to have, but still a ways from making the NHL. The Flames have a number of defencemen prospects roughly in about the same tier.
Would've preferred a 24-28-ish goaltender even if it meant moving Gillies.

I hope the tandem next year is:
Smith
Gillies
Give Gillies a look with some sheltered starts while Smith has a proven ability to carry a starters workload (unlike Elliott).
This also gives Parsons a spot, and hopefully a good amount of starts, in the AHL alongside Rittich.
I like Johnson, but I'd rather give Gillies a try at this point.

The rebuild is done. Becoming a contender is not guaranteed. We are a playoff team... progressing as we should be. Players typically peak around 25-29... we are a few years from that.

No, our 3rd rounder in 2017 goes to Arizona for Stone.
Our 3rd rounder in 2018 was conditional to STL on re-signing or trading Elliott.
That pick is now Arizona's unless the Flames make the playoffs next season, then they get our 2018 2nd rounder instead.

We don't know what Smith will be so that is a wait and see however after one year and one playoffs we know that Elliott did have an impact on games and a series.
Im not saying that Smith is our savior who knows he might be better or worse but the price was fair and we have a starting goalie who has been one in the past.
