It was a pretty craptastic deadline but I'm still happy I took the day off. It was a Wednesday so it was nice to have a break in the middle of the week. There was a good game the night before but it ended late (time change for Ontario) so not having to work the day after a game means you can celebrate a bit more. And let's face it, it was a full day of hockey talk; sure there were some stupid things going on and some time wasting but a slow deadline day where they talk hockey all day is still better than a good day at work.
It was shaping out to be a real boring day but the Lazar trade coming in right at the end of the day really was exciting because I think he'll be a good young player who can be a part of the team moving forward, and he came at a low cost IMO.
(I started a new job this week on Monday but I still took Wednesday off)

There's going to be a compliance buyout period before the expansion draft. The pens are either going to have a couple mill on the books for 4 years for a buyout or trade Murray.

Odd question. But the trade deadline is really just the last day where a player traded does not have to remain with the main club correct? In theory could Wideman still be moved closer to the end of the year when his cap hit is basically zero?

The trade deadline is the date at which time your playoff eligibility is determined. You have to be on a team's reserve list (the 90 player list that basically contains all the roster players, signed prospects, unsigned prospects and anyone else you have the rights for) before the deadline in order to be eligible to play in the NHL playoffs.
Wideman could still be moved at the end of the season when his cap hit goes down, but you could probably get the same effect by just telling him to go home and not come to the rink anymore. (I don't know if this is something a team can actually do but I don't know what would stop them)

It is just called a buyout. Compliance buyouts were temporary to help get NHL teams compliant to the last CBA, and those buyouts did not carry a cap hit. I know what you mean by buying Fleury out (that the Pens will have a cap hit on the buyout), but it is just called a buyout
All in all a somewhat crappy deadline. I prefer what happened yesterday with the Flames making a move and the trades being light than a heavy day in trades but the Flames remain idle.
I have always been a Treliving fan since he joined the organization and really feel he is great at making trades. 2015 moving Glencross was fantastic and thanks to Ferlands emergence he was easily able to make that move. Flames got assets they used in the Hamilton and Kylington trades and Ferland was a beast against the Canucks that year. Schlemko also worked out well. Flipping Sven came as a surprise and was a somewhat controversial move but it came to light that Sven would not re-sign and requested to be moved. Luckily the Flames nabbed a good prospect with that pick in Andersen as Sven has found his game in Van
2016 he made a great move getting top value for Russell. Selling Russell and Jones were the right moves for the team at the time. Flames added Parsons who is a top prospect for the organization now.
2017 he made a very smart move getting Stone a couple weeks before the deadline. Stone being only 26 came cheaper than most suspected and he is a much better fit than Wideman. Bartkowski was similar to Schlemko as he was a free pickup and most Importantly makes the team expansion compliant. Lazar is a move that was similar to the Baertschi trade but the flames were on the other end of the deal. Hopefully it works out but adding a guy that slides in right away and matches with our core group age bracket. This move remains to be seen but the price was right and the upside is high.
Really happy with the moves our GM made at the deadline this year and every year since he took the job. Give that man an extension

I like how Treliving did a little bit of buying but with both Stone and Lazar he still had an eye to the future rather than giving up assets for straight up rentals. Really well done.
