Kind of sums up why this draft is weak, Pt totals fit more of a a guy going 10-15 but he's gonna go top 5. Plays a similar game to Tkachuk at center but without the same passing ability. Interesting player but needs to work alot on his foot speed, very slow.

I said that about Tkachuk s skating last year too. I seriously do not mind the serving of crow I ate while I had a bunch of egg on my face.

People that have watched him play think he has an upside that exceeds Leon Draisaitl. I wanted him so bad when it looked like we were drafting top 5 in December.

To be fair Tkachuk's skating is still awful, among the worst in the league.
The rest of his game is so complete that it more than makes up for it but man if he could skate even at Ferland's level he'd be right up there will Johnny in terms of being able to do everything himself. I expect it to get better but there's only so much one can do obviously.

Very wrong.

Look at how much Draisaitl improved his lousy skating. Even Tavares made major improvements. I'm hoping Tkachuk and Monahan work on skating a lot this summer. Bennett has vowed to come into training camp faster and stronger.
The Hockey Writers didn't make a mention of his IQ at all, which is a bit surprising to me. Not good, not bad - just absolutely no mention.
LWOS didn't provide any info on his IQ either, but they did provide 2 different comments that I guess you can interpret as IQ. One was concerning, the other one was great.
FC doesn't provide any insight into his IQ either.
I don't think the Flames draft him anyways. He is ranked in the late 1st round until the middle of the 2nd round. There are players I definitely seem to like better than Safin, but Safin is a very intriguing prospect. Players of his size with his quickness and speed and potential offensive upside (he is known for his lethal shot and his speed) is something that NHL teams simply covet. Will be interesting to see when he gets drafted. If the Flames do end up taking him at 16, then they must really, really like him. I think it is more likely that if they like him, they do a trade down and grab a second, and hopefully address goaltending.
I also really like Lias. There are actually a solid handful of prospects that I do think project well that may be available at 16 and later. Safin wasn't on my radar at all until I saw his agenda posted up online with the Flames' interview, so naturally I looked him up and I really like what I see in him too. Definitely a very interesting prospect, and I am sure that the Flames have been scouting him for a while since they seem to be finding FAs out of the Czech Republic these days. He does seem like a smart player to me, so the reference of him having poor IQ is news to me. Where did you find it?
My biggest concern with Safin is this.
Granted I haven't seen the games. Getting video of the Czech under 20 league is not easy.
But his stats in that league are not good for a top prospect.
And I havent heard one person talk about why that is.
I just wanted to give a shout-out to Love, who is a fan of PO Joseph: You were extolling the virtues (i think it was this thread?)of taking him in the first round, and i gently kinda poo-pooed it but i now can see that you were probably right about him-he's generated alot of conversation.
It would also appear by the results of the combine that he's actually over 6'2" instead of 6'0" like he's been listed since the season began. He still needs to fill out alot though (hes under 170 lbs).
I agree. After checking his rankings for last year it'd be pretty easy for other teams to see who we like from his list alone. We drafted 6 players from his top 39 (tkachuk, fox, dube, parsons, Phillips and Mattson) with 46 getting a training camp invite (Burke).
Way I see it, the draft will likely follow MacKenzie's list closely, and we will draft the guy in Button's top ten who isn't on MacKenzie's top ten.
So...Elias Pettersson, based on Bob's mid season vs Button's final rank. Only player that fits that criteria currently. Interesting to see if that changes in Bob's final list.
