You bringing that up made me go take another look at the pic. I noticed something strange..

Since when does the coach walk in front of the team on the bench. Unless the entire team is sitting the wrong way on the bench and everyone is looking at the stands... It appears it's a Photoshop, no?

I don't see Hamilton as a future Norris winner or a captain. Nor do I see him as the type of player that carries a team on his shoulders. He's a good 2-4 guys though and I am happy to have him. He is the type of player you would hope to draft in the first half of the 1st round, so giving up a 15th was decent considering he was already proven. Adding two 2nd rounders evened it out more. A good deal, but not a career maker IMO like some people consider it.

I think who he hires as coach will be very important and will make or break him over the next couple of seasons.
If they acquired Hamilton as a prospect and then developed him into what he is you'd have a point.

But they picked up a kid with three years of NHL experience that already is a 2/3 defenseman.

that's the value.

Historically the 15th pick has a 38% chance of playing 100 NHL games.

They got a 21 year old that had already played 200 games.

Yes, that is Eriksson. Other notable names outside of Malkin were Kulemin, Korolev, Yushkevich, Chistov.

That's how the benches used to be set up in the old Russian buildings (I don't know if the newer buildings still are).

The old Russian coach, Viktor Tikhonov used to stand in front of the players all the time. It allowed him to talk to the players more easily during the game.

He would get really upset when they were playing in North American buildings that didn't have enough room for him to walk in front of the players.

It would probably be better to look at a range like 10-20 within the past 15 years or so as drafts can vary from year to year.

Personally, I think adding the two 2nd rounders negates the risk for the Bruins. Out of those 3 picks, there is a really good chance that at least one pans out. Until those picks show fruition, I think the trade is a win for Treliving because less risk like you said, but not the home run most others do.

Look at the Oilers situation and how can you say with a straight face it wasn't a steal. They Oilers have had to got to free agency and pay Sekera, Nikitin, and Fayne a combined $14 million per season to try and fill top 4 holes and two of them are regular healthy scratches and the other is a 2nd pairing defenseman on a good day. It's easily one of the biggest fleecing we've seen in years to get a 22 year old 6'5" 40+ point defenseman for what the Flames gave up as defensemen like Hamilton are rarely ever available.

He's going to be a #1 one day. The way he was playing near the end of the season, he was throwing his body around and controlling the corners physically. Then he'd pass it out to an open lane. None of our other dman can both play physical in the corners and make good passes to open areas where our forwards can pick it up.

He's incredibly strong, when they'd go in the corner he'd ram the opposition with his back and just completely push them out of the play. He's our only dman capable of that currently. Two seasons from now there'll be a problem where Hamilton belongs on the first line, if not the next season. His strength in the corners is invaluable to the teams overall puck possession.

I think Treliving already has a guy in mind, all these interviews are about getting analysis of the flames from other coaches.

These are free assessments and treliving would be stupid not to take it.

He should be interviewing everyone especially coaches who actually coached against the flames in the past Few years.

Boudreau was a coach that actually coached against the Flames the past few years including the playoffs. Even if he wasn't the target why wouldn't you talk to him? Maybe he just moved too fast into his next job, but they never seemed to even make the effort and if Francis can be believed (I know I know) they couldn't be bothered. My issue isn't that they talked to Yeo it's who they didn't talk to.

Probably because you are in Russia.

Conference call, Skype, send Burke, whatever. It's a moot point ultimately and I'm not trying to argue so I won't go on. Just personally found it odd.

You probably got it right, Boudreau didn't want to wait and the Flames weren't really interested I hiring him. I'm sure they would have loved to pick his brain but Treliving isn't going to fly back to North america just to do that.

Yeo is there right now, makes sense to interview him. Maybe Yeo is the one who is being proactive and wants the Calgary job. Why else would he be n Russia right now?

He is one of the coaches for Team Canada at the Worlds. They had a day off.

Draft picks are very very highly over rated. More likely than not, nobody that the Bruins picked ever becomes an every day NHLer, let alone a top 4 defenceman like Hamilton.

I think people forget how young he is...he's from the same draft as Adam Larsson and Jonathon Huberdeau...this is still a developing player!!

He looks to be developing into the best D of his draft class...and I agree, he has #1 upside

Yeah, looking at him now he's a Regehr-like mean streak, an accurate bomb slapshot and a bit more experience away from being a truly elite #1 D-man. Gio will eventually decline and settle into an extremely steadily #3.

Then you realize Dougie is still 3 years younger than Brodie. And defencemen age like fine cheese...
