Yup agreed 100%.

Frolik and Brouwer are the reasonable guys to slot into the 1/2 positions with Chiasson in the 3/4.

Not sure why everyone is penciling Tkachuk on LW, from watching him online he seems just as comfortable on his off wing. Along with the fact that we have significant prospect depth on LW (Shinkaruk, Maingipane, even Jankowski if there isn't place for him up the middle) - I can see the Flames trying him on RW.

Gaudreau Monahan Brouwer
Ferland Backlund Frolik
Shinkaruk Bennett Tkachuk
Bouma Stajan Chiasson
Bollig Hathaway

Giordano Hamilton
Jokipakka Brodie
Wotherspoon Wideman
Engelland

There's no way I'm penciling in Tkachuck. He's got way too much to go before being a head of Poirer or Jankowski

Gaudreau - Monahan - Brouwer
Shinkaruk - Backlund - Chiasson
Poirer - Bennett - Frolik
Bouma - Stajan - Ferland

Giordano - Hamilton
Brodie - Wideman
Jokipakka - Engelland

What? He's a pretty highly touted prospect, it would be pretty difficult with Poirer's development so far to not have Tkachuk ahead of him. Also, Jankowski is a centre, what would he have to do with Tkachuk making the team?

The forward pairs I could see are:

Gaudreau - Monahan - ???
??? - Backlund - Frolik
??? - Bennett - Brouwer
Bollig - Stajan - ???

Which leaves Chiasson, Ferland, and Bouma to cycle throughout the lineup, as well as Tkachuk or whichever prospect(s) you think might make the jump.

Brodie - Dougie
Gio - Wideman
Jokipakka - Engelland

barring injury and other moves here is what I see

Gaudreau - Monahan - Chiasson
Shinkaruk - Backlund - Frolik
Tkachuk - Bennett - Brouwer
Ferland - Stajan - Bouma
Bollig / Hamilton

Gio - Brodie
Jokipakka - Dougie
Wotherspoon - Wideman
Engelland

Elliott
Johnson

I think management believe that GG can bring out Chiasson's offensive abilities and at least try him on the top line and Brouwer will be Bennet's vet as Johnny and Monny do not really need it as much as Bennet does.

It will be interesting to see if they are able to move Wideman and for what but I do not expect to see that move until after the 2 big contracts are completed.

Not a prediction but I am a fan of the way this roster is starting to come together long term - the Elliot, Tkachuk, & Brouwer additions really filled some gaps. IMO the core pieces are here and we have the prospect depth to fill in as needed - maybe just need a big physical defensive d-man still.

The way I look at it our roster is built like this over the next 4 seasons - it's very likely that these guys are all locked up and a key part of the roster.

Core Young Top 6 Forwards
Gaudreau
Monahan
Tkachuk
Bennett

Veteran Middle 6 Forwards
Backlund
Frolik
Brouwer

Top D
Giordano
Hamilton
Brodie

Goalies
Elliot
Johnson

That is 12 players of our 23 man roster, the rest is then filled with:

Bottom 6 Forwards
Stajan
Bouma
Ferland
Chiasson
Hathaway

Bottom Pairing D-Men

Jokipakka
Engelland
Wotherspoon

AHL/Call Up/Prospect Forwards
Jankowski
Shinkaruk
Pollock
Klimchuk
Mangiapane
Pribyl
Porier
Smith
Dube
Lindstrom
Mattson

AHL/Call Up/Prospect D-Men

Kylington
Andersson
Fox
Kulak
Culkin
Hickey
Olias-Mattson

Back up/AHL/Prospect Goalies
Gillies
MacDonald
Schneider
Parsons

Pretty good shape IMO - if a couple of the prospects can surprise and if we can add a LH defensive d-man to be Hamilton's partner and for the PK/defensive zone faceoffs then we will be laughing.

I like what you had but I moved Brouwer up to the top line. No matter what happens, I think this top 6 is better than we had in the last few years.

My guess is:

Gaudreau - Monahan - Bouma
Shinkaruk - Backlund - Frolik
Tkachuk - Bennett - Brouwer
Bollig - Stajan - Chaisson
Ferland

Gio - Brodie
Jokipakka - Hamilton
Wotherspoon - Wideman
Engelland

Elliott
Johnson

I think (hope) Bouma has a resurgence this year under a new coach & can bring some energy back to his game that they use to help spread out the offence across 3 lines... if that doesn't work, that whole right side is still up in the air and I think they try Shinkaruk or even Tkachuk there instead.

Gaudreau - Monahan - Frolik
Ferland - Bennett - Brouwer - *1
Shinkaruk - Backlund - Chaisson
Bouma - Stajan - Hathaway

Jokipakka - Brodie
Gio - Hamilton
Engelland - Wideman
*2

Elliot
Johnson

*1 - Double shift Gaudreau once a period
*2 - Holding out that we can sign Nakladal cheap after our RFA's

Actually surprised that Bouma hasn't been mentioned more for the top line. He can win puck battles and has a decent one timer.

I really do think that Jankowski should make the team before Tkachuk, but would benefit from a full year in the AHL, as Tkachuk would as the man in London.

Gaudreau - Monahan - Brouwer
Shinkaruk - Backlund - Frolik
Ferland - Bennett - Bouma
Hathaway - Stajan - Chiasson
Bollig, Pribyl

Giordano - Brodie
Jokipakka - Hamilton
Wotherspoon - Wideman
Engelland, Nakladal?

Elliott
Johnson

2017/2018 Prediction (Just for fun)

Jokipakka taken in Expansion Draft by Las Vegas
Mikael Backlund and Lance Bouma for Rick Nash (1M Retained) and 2nd Round Pick

Gaudreau - Monahan - Brouwer
Tkachuk - Bennett - Nash
Ferland - Jankowski - Frolik
Hathaway - Stajan - Carroll
Poirier

Giordano - Brodie
Nakladal - Hamilton
Wotherspoon - Kulak
Andersson?

Elliott (Re-signed to 3-4 year deal)
Johnson (Re-signed for 1 year deal for expansion draft exposure)
(Gillies come on full time as Elliot's back up for 2018/2019)

Poirier on the third line? Maybe in the AHL. There is a very slim chance Poirier makes the team next season and he's definitely not ahead of Tkachuk. Poirier is behind in development and doesn't look to be an NHL player at all yet.

This is how I see the training camp battles. Each line has a spot open.

Gaudreau-Monahan-A
B-Bennett-Brouwer
C-Backlund-Frolik
Bouma-Stajan-D

Bolded are the off-season favorites imo.
Battling for A: Chiasson, Vey, Pribyl, Porier
Battling for B: Shinkaruk, Tkachuk, Ferland
Battling for C: Shinkaruk, Tkachuk, Ferland
Battling for D: Bollig, Hathaway, Hamilton
Extra forward: Vey, Hathaway, Hamilton

Wideman will eventually get moved. Still few teams fooking for a dman.
Giordano-Brodie
E-Hamilton
F-Engelland

Battling for E: Jokipakka, Kulak, New comer
Battling for F: Jokipakka, Kulak, Wotherspoon
Extra: Wotherspoon

Elliott
Johnson

I wouldn't trade Backlund for Nash straight, let alone throwing in Bouma for a 2nd.

Rick Nash would be a 33 year old with one year left on his $7.8M deal even though he only scored 36 points last year.

Backlund, on the the hand, is 5 years younger, signed to a much cheaper deal, outscored Nash last season, is a possession magnet and scored 47 points last year.

Might be a good idea to do a no-trades and no-moves for roster predictions in future after the free agency period. Too many people go into armchair GM mode instead of armchair coach mode.
