Go back and read the Gio signing thread. It is 90% positive and most fans loved the signing. There were some people that were cautious but for the lost part the fan base on this site was happy. Then you look at the media and HF response (outside Oiler haters) and again the deal was praised.
I don't recall a large discussion on this forum over the summer about Gio never returning to form? Maybe is missed it?

Friedman on 960 says even though he reported Anahiem was out of it on Saturday, he is now convinced they may still be in it because they have the young defencemen Snow wants.
He is not sure if Hamonic wants to go to Anahiem.
22 scouts watching Habs/Islanders which is higher than normal.
Friedman thinks if Calgary wants to get in on this it needs to be a 3 way deal.
Anahiem and Winnipeg have the assets to do the deal straight up with out needing a 3 way deal.

I want Hamonic on the team, but I don't think we need to go chasing him too hard. I hope Treliving doesn't get too caught up in the pursuit.
I have confidence that he's got a hard-and-fast 'no-touchy' rule on the young core of the team, our draft picks, and at least a few of our prospects, but sometimes you can get caught up in the thrill of the hunt.
If he ends up in Winnipeg, great, not in our division.

Agreed really hope he doesn't go to the Oilers unless they grossly overpay

It's hilarious how most people didn't even know of Hamonic (myself included) until this very thread was made, and now some people would trade our captain ''in a heartbeat''. Thank god we have a GM who does his homework and not some rabid fans running the show, especially 23% into a season. There are always people willing to throw some players away when a shiny new ''younger'' toy comes into play. What a joke.
MAYBE Treliving considers it when Hamonic even has a sniff of the success Gio has had.

Best idea ever: Trade Gio for Hamonic then trade Hamonic for a 2017 first rounder! We'd be progressively getting younger!

We can go deeper. Trade the 2017 first for a 2024 first!

FWIW, Eric Francis says the Flames are NOT willing to part with Hamilton for Hamonic.

If your a team that was not mentioned by Hamonic as a preferred destination why would you move assets to acquire him, fully knowing he would be unhappy?

How serious were Hamonic's previous (2) concussions?

Hamonic is the type of D man that the flames need to acquire to play along side Hamilton. Not lose Hamilton trying to acquire Hamonic. Then we would just be looking to acquire a player like Hamilton to play along side of Hamonic.

Just to play devils advocate...
How do you know Treliving hasn't offered Gio and the Isles are the ones who won't do it? That, to me, is also entirely possible.

Set aside personal feelings towards the players and just look objectively:
25 year old top-4 dman who is trending upwards signed for $3.8milAAV
32 year old top-4 dman who is trending downwards (I know it's a small sample size, but there's more evidence to suggest a downwards trend than even remaining at the same level) signed for $6.75milAAV on a contract that doesn't kick in until next year when he's 33 and lasts until he's 39.
I know Gio is our captain and all, but strictly as a hockey move I think it's a no-brainer.
(Remember, I know he has more value than just his hockey skills and I love Gio, just playing devils advocate here)

Even if it were obvious that Gio was done, there would have to be a HUGE +++ coming from the isles to make that happen.

^^^^^ at the end of the day if Gio was still the bonified #1 from last year we wouldnt even need to have this debate. Really hope he comes back. If not 3 years from now the posters will be out saying "shouldve traded for Hamonic". Hope we dont need to say this..

The Flames have the #1, #2 and #3 positions basically locked up for the next 5 years barring injury or sudden regression.
Over the next 18 months, the Flames will have to address the #4, 5 and 6. You can likely fill one or two of those spots internally through the kids. After that though, you will need a transitional player or two.
If a deal makes sense to get Hamonic to become the #4, that's fine and should be done. If the deal does not work, then target another guy with a similar pedigree as either Hamilton, Leddy or Hamonic. A young guy needing a change of scenery. A guy like Cam Fowler might be someone that makes sense. There are plenty of guys out there, just depends if the cost is something manageable.
Just depends on who/what is out there.
