How? Good service and a tip that I voluntarily made. Just like in Calgary.

That's cool. You don't have to tip in Australia though, just an FYI. It's not a thing there.

100% true too. Except down there, you can have a sit down meal with excellent service and socially it's not expected that you leave a tip.

Let's not label a country of 26 million people and say tipping isn't expected. Some make it seem like US and Canada are only places with tipping culture, that is just false..or fake news.
|
Well let’s not label a portion of that country either, if tipping is indeed expected by some we’ll play your game and you can provide statistical proof.
If you don’t have it right now we can wait until you start yet another account.
For the record I’ve found it rather amusing that you’ve continually tried to imply that the term tipping culture has some sort of rigid definition.

If a lululemon store had a tipping option...something I've never seen in North America then it may be expected.
|
You’re wrong on this. A tip is not expected at restaurants in Australia. It may be appreciated. But unlike in North America, it is absolutely not expected.

Asking if they have a deadbeat husband comes off as pretty intrusive, even if your intentions are good. Just saying.
Personally I know quite a few waitresses that are both single mothers and have absent or mostly absent fathers of their children so I’m surprised you’ve yet to come across one if you’re actively digging for that information. I’ve also known at least 1 who’s a single mother and the father isn’t a deadbeat but she plays it up as if he is for better tips. Which I think is pretty brutal for him.

Picture this - you're a country where eating out is common but waiters aren't paid a proper wage so have to rely on tips. Some are even charged a small fee by their employers. Tipping 15%-20% is the norm and now the practice is spreading to shops and cafes. Places with service counters are starting to demand tips. Everyone grumbles but no-one wants to penalise the staff. They look enviously across the Atlantic where tipping is uncommon. Sound familiar? This is France in 1936.
In France in the 1930s, tipping was getting completely out of hand. Some shops had even started asking for tips. No-one knew how much a product was going to cost, and the waiting staff didn't know if they'd be able to pay the bills. Meanwhile, across the pond in America, tipping was uncommon - even forbidden in many places. It was considered an affront to human dignity harking back to Europe's aristocratic past. Everyone deserves a fair wage.So what did France do?
Well, first, in 1937, they outlawed the "droit de tablier" - the fee some places were charging their staff. Then, shortly after, they outlawed tipping altogether. Restaurants were told to add 15-20% to the menu and pay their staff a living wage. Shops were forbidden from charging for service. That is the story of tipping in France, and also why even today menus in France say "service compris".This is how TIME reported
it

Not something I say often, but we should do what France did.

I see.
If you don't tip...do they still disinfect your shoes with that apparently magical spray?

We got prompted for a tip on our boat gas - 15%, 20% or 25%. I understand that they're providing a service by tying your boat off, but 25% on $500 of gas is a hell of a tip!

I've gotten way more comfortable hitting "no tip" now. If it's not something I was already planning to tip for, I say no.

I have a few places where I tip, but Movers? Those guys EARN it!
I have only used movers a handful of times, but I've always been lucky to have good movers.
I dont know how those guys do it. Its exhausting just watching them.
When I left my old office for my new one one of my tenants asked me if I wanted his filing cabinet because he was folding his business up and retiring.
I'm an accountant, cant have too many filing cabinets, so I said sure.
Lo and behold moving day comes and, I never really inspected this cabinet, it just sat in the corner, had 3 drawers, whatever right?
I had no idea it was made by Remington in the 1960s and the drawers, top and bottom are concrete-lined and fire-proof.
Its essentially a Safe, with drawers.
This thing weighed 500+ pounds and the movers wrangled that bitch into the truck, to the new office and off the truck and put it where I asked them to.
Oh yes. They got a tip for that. IMO that was 'above and beyond.'
