I grew up in the 90s when the marvel tv cartoons were really at the top of the superhero market, so it might skew my view. I don't know that Batman - Superman - Wonder Woman are any more Iconic than Spiderman - Wolverine - Hulk. If you are anywhere under ~45, I can't imagine a time where one of those trios would have dominated the other completely in the cultural zeitgeist.
Erroneous. The tippie-top of the superhero TV cartoons was:
Ha, this totally corroborates the story I gave a teenager a while ago, when he asked who the most popular superheroes were 25-30 years ago. I told him: "There were the big three—Superman, Batman, and Spider-Man, in that order—and everyone else. Comic book fans knew all about Captain America, Iron Man, The Hulk, etc. but to the general public they were fringe."
Kid couldn't believe it. He couldn't believe the Marvel superheroes he grew up with in the last 12ish years, that dated back decades, weren't all that popular when I was a kid. "Believe it," I said. "People remembered The Hulk TV show with Lou Ferrigno, but that's what 95% of people you asked would know about the character: he was a big green dude played on TV by a bodybuilder. A few people still fondly remembered the '70s Wonder Woman TV show with Lynda Carter. Older folks remembered and were fond of Captain America, but he hadn't really been popular for about 40 years."
I figured even in the late '80s that #4 would have been Captain America, then perhaps Hulk or X-Men. X-Men seemed to be very popular in the early '90s anyway. Past that it was tough to say; you had a few die-hards who loved Iron Man, Fantastic Four—I had a buddy whose favourite character was easily Silver Surfer—Green Lantern... Past that? Oof. You had a handful of real weirdos who liked Judge Dredd, The Phantom, etc.
That's solely with respect to general popularity, not comics popularity, wherein I know X-Men were huge in the '90s.
I stand by my original statement, they are fairly close at the top, maybe slight edge to DC (like the oilers). but Marvels bench is way deeper, and deeper pretty fast.
I've said it before, Momoa was bad casting for Aquaman, but perfect for Lobo, so I have no problem with it. I think the only other person who could have been a good Lobo is Bautista, but he'd look weird with hair and Lobo would look weird bald.
Actually, Liam Hemsworth would be a really good choice for Aquaman.
I think Mamoa being cast as Aquaman was their attempt to make the character more cool or bad ass, and less the brunt end of so many jokes.
But all he did was basically just play himself, which checks those boxes, but didn't really make me care at all about the character.
It is a tough nut to crack and I wouldn't be surprised if Gunn just steers himself completely clear of that character.
You don't need an Aquaman to make the JLA.

Nintendo is officially producing a live action Legend of Zelda movie with Avi Arad and Sony Pictures. Wes Ball (The Maze Runner, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes) is attached to direct.
I'd be shocked if the Marvels made less than $400 million. The Flash only did 270 million. The Eternals did $400 million. This seems like it has more of an audience than that.

Who knows? Brie Larson is also a polarizing figure.
I'm not going to say in the same vein as Ezra Miller, thats simply not true, but there is a demographic out there that arent fans.
But to be fair, Captain Marvel was...a pretty weak offering. Not like tons of people were lining up for that one, so the sequel? I dont know.

If you thought this season would have a happy ending, you haven't been paying attention.
More than a few people were lining up for Captain Marvel, it’s grossed over a billion! Of course it benefited from the pre end game hype while the sequel will suffer from Marvel fatigue.
Personally I was interested in a Brie Larson led sequel, not so much a team up with two steaming characters thrown in.

Really? Okay, fair enough. I find Brie Larson about as interesting as Wonder Bread, but to each their own.

I've been hearing that it had a rough go yesterday, and I was wondering what the sales were like for tonight, being the official opening night.
I just checked my Cineplex app. Of the 10 showing left today, 2 theatres were about half full, 7 were 10-25% full, and one only had 4 seats taken so far (out of 101)
For an opening night of a new Marvel movie? That's got to be pretty weak.
I decided to look for tomorrow.
Out of 16 screenings, the fullest theatre had a dozen people in it. Two of the screenings are completely empty.

A solid contender for the worst Marvel film yet ... To say The Marvels is hard to watch would be to risk understatement. It’s not just that it’s not very good. It is hard to watch in the sense that a tree is hard to defibrillate. 1/5 - Donald Clarke, Irish Times
