It does seem unlikely but they were willing to do it both last off season and this off season, given who they were chasing. If they want to make a run, they have to bite the bullet.
Doesn't matter though, they'll be lucky if one of those guys chooses to sign with them, let alone both.

It would be quite something to sign a couple aging players to big contracts while also not signing Vladdy to a big contract

Well, it takes two parties to agree to a contract and Vlad thinks he's worth $450 million apparently.

If Soto is worth 15 x $765 ($51M) then is $450 x 10 ($45M) really that crazy for Vlad...
I think the mistake the Jays made here was not signing Vlad before Soto reset the market.

My worry would be can Vlad stay in shape for the 10 years, and will he become consistent enough to be paid like an upper-echelon player.

I have my doubts. He's struggled to stay in shape and produce consistently through his mid twenties. I can't see him improving those areas as he enters into his 30s.
Not to mention the endless bone headed mistakes he continually makes.

I think you also have some bias against Vlad in that you just don't like the player.
Vlad will be 26 at the start of the season, and generally that's the start of a MLB players prime, especially when it comes to consistency.
The deal to me is actually not that hard to figure out what it would need to look like for him to sign.
AAV: $41-$45M.
Term: 10-12 years.
I think if it's 12 years then you could see the lower AAV: So 12 x $500 = $41.6M AAV
If it's 10 years only then it's probably the higher AAV: So 10 x $450 = $45.0M AAV
Big thing with all these deals...is there is likely an opt out anyways.
Soto has an Opt-Out at 31 after 5 years of the deal, Vlad would likely get the same thing after 4-5 years. And with the way MLB salaries are going they likely opt out at that time while still in the middle of their prime.
Issue is Jays should have had this done before Judge and Soto re-signed.

Does anyone undervalue and dislike their own homegrown stars more than Toronto Blue Jays fans?

Vlad will easily get the $450m on the open market, is this team doesn't want to pay that then they don't want elite talent to come to Toronto and this team may as well settle in to being basement dwellers for the next 5-10 years.
Since 2021 he is 10th in wOBA, 11th in Hard Hit %, 6th in Exit Velocity, 10th in Batting Average, 13th in Slugging %, 11th in OPS, 7th in HR, 6th in RBI, 7th in 2B.
He is an elite offensive player, letting Vladdy walk would be far and away the dumbest thing this front office has done and they have done a lot of dumb things.

If he's dead set on greater than 10 years and he wants to break $500M then personally I'd be fine with them giving him 12 x $500M with an opt out after 5 years (32).
People might be afraid of the opt out but I think it actually is good for this team where they are at.

My predictions...
Vladdy - 12 yrs $447 heavily deferred (dodger style) Will be announced early next week..
Then
Alonzo 3 yrs $90 mutual opt out after year 1
(or)
Bregman 6 year $295 with deferrals
Whichever says yes first ... Either of these see's Bichette moved late ST
Then
Sherzer - 1 yr
(or)
Pivetta - 2 yr
(or)
Flaherty - 4 yr
Once Vladdy signs they are all in...

Scherzer to the rotation, Rodrigues to the pen. Two birds with one stone.
Love this signing.

Getting Scherzer is a pretty big deal. He may be past his prime but he has shown he can throw and has great command when the situation calls for it. If they’re out of contention they can also deal him for a solid return. I wish it were two years. HOF player.

The only thing is he apparently has no interest in a deferred contract.

Love the Scherzer signing. Even if he doesn’t perform to his previous lofty standards, having his winning pedigree, leadership and attitude in the dugout/clubhouse will for sure make a large impact

Really like the Scherzer signing. Guys like Bloss, Kloffenstein, Tiedeman, Macko should hopefully learn a lot, same for Francis and Manoah.

If previous rumors hold any weight, the Jays weren't going to go after Scherzer unless they had Alonso or Profar. Actually I think it was just Alonso.
So this could be a positive sign of other things to come.
