Couple points.. first of all moving one of Brodie/Hamonic doesn't 100% mean for draft picks. Could be to address weakness elsewhere.
Secondly good teams tend to have to do both.
While Chicago was trading draft picks at the deadline for Johnny Oduya, John Scott, Michael Handzus and others they were still sending Michael Frolik, David Bolland, Troy Brouwer, Dustin Byfuglien etc out in the summer to deal with potential cap issues.
You can think the Flames should trade for Ferland or Maroon as forward depth at the trade deadline and still want deal with contract issues in the summer. It's not one or the other.

I can see the Flames moving guys like Frolik and Stone and Ryan over the next few trade deadlines. And maybe a guy like Bennett gets traded to rebalance the team.
And if the kids (at least a couple of them) really go next level on D, then I could see moving Hamonic next year as well.
Lots has to happen first though. I don't see them moving anyone out this year.

Watching Tampa, if the Flames want a realistic shot at beating a team like that, we are going to have add a bit at the deadline. Another threat in the middle six, I think. And hope Rittich goes into a god-like state.

The 3 rookie D are good and will improve but are no where near Brodie level right now.

Honestly, I don't think there is much between the teams, other than goaltending. If the Flames had Vasilevsky this year, I think we'd be pretty close to them.
Since Oct 26th, there isn't a lot between us. Since the PIT game, we are 17-5-2 and they are 19-6-0. Looking at the losses:
WAS OTL - could have won with better goaltending
ANA L - would have won with better goaltending
SJS L - would have had a chance with better goaltending
MTL L - would have won with better goaltending
VGK L - good goaltending, got shutout
DAL OTL - would have won with better goaltending
EDM L - good goaltending, got shutout
In 22 games, we got shutout twice, and there were one or two other games we probably lose anyway, but there is no question that we would have won at least one or two more games, which would have our record better than Tampa's over that time.

It should be noted that both games where we got shutout were "revenge" games after we humiliated the opponent. Edmonton with a wild embarassing comeback, Vegas with their worst loss in franchise history. So the motivation factor was significant.

When teams are in the zone and contending for the cup, which Calgary is doing, they seldom trade players they need for futures.
Unless they need to do so for cap reasons. But those trades are done during the summer, not at the trade deadline.

I’d like to see the Flames improve their 2C position and push Backlund down to a pure shutdown 3C while increasing offence on our 2nd line / 2PP unit.
Both NYR Centers Hayes and Zibanejad would be my targets. I feel like this would push us over the top and allow us to add another core player.
Cap issues would have to be addressed in the summer, but guys like Stone, Frolik and potentially Ryan would have to be moved.

To add another threat we need the Flames need James Neil to be James Neil. That may be the difference right now.

If Jankowski ever takes another step he will become a very solid #2 center.

If it makes you feel better, I don't think it is asinine at all. Man, I hate that word. It is an overly nasty and aggressive word for this discussion.
I wouldn't trade him this season unless it was a sweet heart of a deal though. I am not pining to trade Brodie in the off season either, but all rosters are dynamic and always changing. Brodie had a down season last year and if we can maximize the asset value, then it is something to consider. Plus, like you said, team salary is always a consideration. Andersson might not be ready to take his spot yet, but I do feel that he is heading in that direction.

Some guy who only scored 12 points in 46 games in his last year in the English Premier League. 28 year old who hasn’t played since the ‘14-‘15 season. Probably not the guy we’re hoping Neal can be.
