If the Flames didn't have Mackey on a 2-year deal, I would agree. But in that tweener #6/7 role that Valimaki is in right now, Mackey could easily be in that spot and the Flames wouldn't miss a beat.
I'm sure the Flames are not actively shopping Valimaki, but if there's a team that really likes him and are willing to trade a young forward of similar pedigree, they should consider it.

Monahan-mangiapane looks like it could have some stirrings.
Would really like to get these guys a cerebral rhs to play with them.
Gaudreau-lindholm-tkachuk
Mangiapane-monahan-rw
Coleman-backlund-dube
Lucic-richardson-pitlick
Connor brown showed chemistry with mangi and might not be expensive. Forsberg more expensive but better. Any others that might be out there?

Monahan and Mangiapane have improved their defence but Coleman gives them a real level of comfort. Similar to Lindholm on line one, Backs on Line 2.

I hope the Sharks fall off the map and we can pitch them an offer for Kevin LeBanc

Labanc is another interesting option but I don't love his contract.
I think coleman-backs are better together. Make a.great match up duo, like a better backlund-frolik. Dube adds some nice speed on their wing.

Monahan + Hanifin + Valimaki + Zary + 1st in 22 and 23 both unprotected
For MacKinnon + Girard + 2nd
Gaudreau - MacKinnon - Tkachuk
Mangiapane - Lindholm - Coleman
Dube - Backlund - Lewis
Lucic - Richardson - Pitlick
Duehr, Ritchie
Girard - Andersson
Kylington - Tanev
Zadorov - Gudbranson
Stone, Mackey
Markstrom

A sluggish start does not mean that a team will trade its generational player for a bunch of stuff. If for some reason he was available, the headliner would be a Lefreniere type player, not Monny lol.

If we're trading Val, one guy I would love to target is young Ottawa Sens C Shane Pinto. He's a righty, has size (6'2"), and was drafted in the 2nd round (32nd overall). He's only played 5 games with 1 point this year (he's out right now with a shoulder injury), but he scored 7 pts in 11 games last year-after picking up 32 pts in 28 games in college. He displays mature defensive acumen, and skates well-he's going to be a hell of a player soon. Problem is, the Sens might be too weak at C to let any go.

Pinto just came back from injury and then reinjured trying to take a faceoff. He looked like his shoulder separated. If he needs surgery, I don't think he's going to be moved anytime soon, as the Sens wouldn't want to be giving any kind of a discount due to perceived weakness. A good target, but timing is bad.

Dude the Avs are not trading MacKinnon LOL. We had once chance at a young elite #1C and his name was Eichel, and we royally ####ed that up.

surely the McKinnon post was supposed to be green text?
Flames offered 3 firsts for him before he played a game and were turned down

I thought they offered all of their picks that year. Monahan for McKinnon would have turned out well though.

You could keep increasing value, but there's just certain players that don't get moved during their prime.
McDavid, MacKinnon, Barkov, etc.

McDavid will be.

I believe that was the Islanders who offered every pick they had. The Flames offered all three of their 1sts that year.

But you're still going to need a 7D next season and one that can step in and play meaningful minutes in case of injury. That would probably be another cost controlled young D in Mackey. Assuming they don't sign Stone to yet another 1 year deal.
The Flames don't have a deep pool of defensive prospects to just ship them out
Send Valimaki off and what happens if Mackey falters or gets hurt?
Young players with upside on small deals is what the team needs to fill out the roster.

I thought the Islanders offered every pick they had to move up from 4 OA to 2 OA. In 2012.

A cerebral RW you say...how about Joe Pavelski
Dallas is struggling and may look to move the pending UFA.
He would look great next to Mangiapane and Monahan IMO
