Back-diving contracts are those where you get more money up front and less at the end.
This is actually a contract where the player gets less money up front and a lump-sum payment at the end. It's the exact opposite of back-diving.

Frank ‘The Twinke’ Seravalli sure comes across as a whiney, self-important Twinke most times.

Can none of these guys do math? The Oilers get worse after this season not better. Even with "discounts" they will all make more money and be getting older. Taking less to win makes zero sense. Oilers have no prosoects to fill in the depth.

The humorous thing about all this is that we are seeing this now, not because no one knew about it, but because it is not in the player's interest to do this.
It makes sense if you're an RFA and the clock is ticking on the season, but the idea that someone with Draisaitl's leverage would submit to this kind of deal is pretty funny. Sure, pay me money in a decade instead of now. Why not guys?

I predict that this will drag into the season, and it's gonna be hilarious.

Wonder how long into the season until Oilers fans realize he’s actually leaving? They may not at all. He could announce it emphatically on air and the response from Staples afterwards would be “I think this is just part of the negotiation… Bowman will get this done.”

A reminder that when it comes to football, as with all other things,
Edmonton is no good.

The longer this goes heading towards the season the more anxiety for the Oiler fans and Staples. They know the deadline.
There's no leaks on a deal.
If he isn't signed by day 1 of camp, Draisaitl is going to be flooded by questions, everywhere he goes in Edmonton, tearful buck toothed hillbillys will be asking him if he's signed yet hyuk hyuk.
I expect that Drai and his agent will want to nip that in the bud before training camp.
"Yeah, we're not talking contract till after the playoffs.
Hyuk Hyuk.

The point being it’s loading the contract at one end. The reason back-loading wasn’t an issue, is because it made no sense for the player or the team.
Regardless, its cap circumvention.

Imagine if the oilers lose Draisaitl and McDavid to free agency in 2025 and 2026, respectively. The drop off would be crazy fast in every measure. The team would become a lottery team as early as next year even if McDavid is still there. I have no doubt they’ll have traded their 2026 pick by then though so they likely won’t reap the benefits of that pick.

Rodrigue had better save % than Askarov last two years in the AHL. .912 and. 916 to. 911 twice. That's it. That's the analysis.
Last season, Askarov was 8th in the AHL with a 2.39 GAA. Rodrigue was 26th with 2.73, below notable stud goalies like Jack Campbell.
At least Staples has some inadvertent self-awareness

Replace "goalie expert" with....literally anything else and the statement remains accurate.

How can that even be true in Edmontonland. Askarov makes more $ than Rodrigue.

That’s because Rodrigue took the “veterans win with Mavi discount”.
