The reality is that NOBODY can give you a completely impartial primer on the candidates. The only way to be totally fair is to give the candidates the opportunity to speak for themselves which is what calgarydemocracy.ca does (it lists the candidates and links to them, and it maintains a list of forums you can attend). Unfortunately that means you have to do a bit more work yourself. If you're looking for opinions though, it would probably help to know which ward you're interested in. Not many people will have looked into all of them.

As an outsider looking in (Live in Airdrie) Nenshi has alot of vocal support, albeit in smaller numbers, and a higher number of people dedicated to voting for him, Most people will say Higgins or Mciver, but not actually head to the polls.
Nenshi could very well pull right up the middle ala Stelmach....Hopefully with better results...

I know and your right, but thats what I was looking for... a jumping off point so to speak.. i'm in ward 14. I have to say thank god for the Calgary sun. I mean, the first link I went to was 20 questions with one of the candidates... now I know this About Shawn Kao... .... .... .... .... ....
1) It's Sunday morning, what are you having for breakfast? Scrambled Eggs, Hash Browns and OJ
2) If you didn't do what you do for a living, what would you be? Alderman of Ward 14 (hello?)... if that answer isn't allowed, professional beach volleyball player
3) Who's your hero? Anyone who puts their life on the line to protect others
4) What's one DVD you had to buy? Spaceballs (can't go wrong for $5 at Walmart)
5) Dogs or cats? Dogs
yep. now I can vote. go Calgary sun. the Fox news of Calgary.

No idea if this will work (I suspect not), but try this. If not, it's www.calgaryvotesonline.com and click through or scroll down to Ward 14. It's the closest I've found to what you're looking for. Of course the incumbent, Fox-Mellway, didn't bother to submit anything. Of course that says a lot too.

The Herald isn't much better. They ran a profile on each ward where they mentioned what they thought were the main issues (for my ward they discussed 2 issues - the west LRT which is a done deal, and the ring road which is a provincial responsibility). Then they listed each candidate, and instead of providing something useful like where they stand on any of the issues, they just provided their marital status and how many kids they have.

Thanks for this. After reading what the School Board Trustee candidates wrote, I'll be voting for Shutiak in Wards 8&9.

This is pure idiocy from Ric McIver:
http://www.calgarysun.com/news/alber.../15648561.html
Quote:
axpayers shouldn’t front the bill for major developments like the East and West Villages — and they won’t if Ric McIver is elected mayor, he vowed Sunday.
“There’s no way the public should be subsidizing major developments like that and I will be looking to have somebody other than the citizens of Calgary take the risk,” he said.
The city borrowed $250 million to forge ahead with the East Village development and expect to recoup that money via property taxes from new developers expected to flock to the area over the next 20 years.
|
CMLC just sold 15% of the available developable land in the East Village for a $300M project (no mention of how much it sold for). Someone tell me how this brownfield development isn't a good idea? No developer in Calgary would take on the challenge of the East Village, so the CMLC stepped in to build it. Meanwhile McIver will go ahead and increase the +$300M debt that the city has with Calgary developers like Carma.

I don't think the land was sold for $300M. $300M is the cost of that development. I've looked around, but I can't find any mention of what the parcel sold for.
"The $300-million project set for a 2012 groundbreaking will deliver about 700,000 square feet of residential and retail space. Developers hope to have some of the nearly 600 new residential units available a year later."

I had the displeasure of meeting and dealing with Craig Burrows in his time as Alderman of Ward 6. Let me just say, the idea, as remote as it is, that he could ever be mayor makes me sick. There was a reason the people of Ward 6 banded together to oust him last election.

Since the City owns most of the land in East Village, and in particular West Village, what is it to do with this land? Sell it for $1 like Vancouver did for the former Expo lands to Concord Pacific?
The City can accrue enormous benefits (financial and otherwise) from acting as land developer of these lands.
Besides, did Ric McIver not always vote in favour of the creation of CMLC, the East Village ARP, the Community Revitalization Levy and so forth???
40 years of NOTHING happening in East Village and now finally major progress, but for Dr. No - nah, a terrible idea.
Like the park and ride fee and other issues, suddenly he's against them now even though he voted for them.

That poll is a bit deflating for Nenshi supporters. It appeared a couple weeks ago that Higgins was stumbling and that Nenshi could potentially pass her. I'm really amazed her support is actually on the rise. Nenshi is still rising in the polls, but time is running out. I think he needed a number like 25% with both the other two softening in support.

Wasn't she at 28% last time? She jumped 11% in what, one week?
Also it says they're in a statistical tie at 37% and 34% (Higgens/McIver) - huh?
I tried downloading the PDF in the hopes it would have the raw data but it's just a rehash of the story.

It means that the poll's margin of error at 95% confidence could mean that Higgins is actually tied with or behind McIver.
