I wish....I have an 06 Silverado that my inlaws gifted me out of pity and a 2010 Town and Country. I have to try and sell off the follies of my youth (2002 Mustang GT Convertible) along with the truck this summer and see if I cant find like an 04 Camry to haul a couple kids in car seats around in.

My dream of fancy cars went out the window with kid number 3. Cheap and practical for now until the hockey and lacrosse gear stop being thrown into the back of them. Have a 2010 Sedona and 2014 Versa Note. Hate the van but love that little car, pretty much just a commuter and kid hauler.

One the kids get a little a older I'll pick up a new Tacoma. Miss my old truck and would love to have another again some day.

That is what Mustangs are for.

I love cars so much, but I'm cursed with valuing financial prudence even more. Fortunately, Ford has the vehicle for guys like me. Mustangs are totally fun and you can mod them to be pretty hot cars as well. My current one is stock (other than the wheels and the stereo), but it is dirt cheap to maintain, mod, insure, etc.

I only paid $11,800 for it, which is not far off what my uncle paid for one service on his Porsche ($6k alone for the timing chain). I park it all winter, and then I have a fun car in the summer that hasn't tied up a lot of my money and no matter what goes wrong it won't be expensive to fix. Plus any mechanic can work on them.

NSFW!

To each his own... Mustangs are a pretty "meh" drive to me. To be honest I think my practical crossover is more fun (and I can think of a couple of others that meet that description, too; Infiniti EX or FX specifically).

I drove an Infiniti FX for six months. It was nice, but fun to drive? I've never heard a car person describe any crossover as fun to drive. They handle like complete ass.

I suppose what makes something fun to drive varies from person to person. When I think fun to drive I think of stomping on it when the light turns green, laying rubber, fish tailing around a corner, drifting a bit, RWD, taking the top off a convertible, a V8 rumbly sound, etc.

What about an FX/Murano or EX/Rogue are fun to you?

If I had to have just one car, I would definitely take the FX over my Mustang. A Mustang isn't a nice year-round daily driver. It is only for fun.

Describing an FX and EX as a Murano and Rogue makes me wonder if you've driven any of those cars. Especially the Rogue and its CVT, that thing is garbage.

An EX35/37 is literally the exact same car as the G35/G37x with a hatchback, and the FX is about as stiff and quick. And I don't really get why you'd think RWD was necessary? I guess it's just taste, but... Audi? What I wouldn't give to drive this sucker.

Like I said, to each his own, and I've spent a fair number of hours in an early 2000's Mustang, and for me, it wasn't exciting, just felt like driving a car.

First of all, I can't understand your perspective. I'm talking about a RWD car for $12K in response to a guy saying he likes Corvettes but they're too expensive and you're telling me about how much fun FX crossovers are to drive. Like it doesn't even make sense. They're totally different cars meant for totally different driving experiences and one of them is double or triple the price of the other.

And now you're throwing in an Audi RS6? Yes, I also concede that the 950 horsepower RS6 is better than my Mustang. Nobody would argue that. Let me hop on Kijiji really quick and see if I can pick one up for $11,800.

So a Mustang wasn't exciting for you - it felt like driving a car. Well guess what it is? A car. Are you saying it felt like driving around a Honda Civic? If that's what you meant, then yes, you're right that you can opt to drive them around in a sedate manner. If you want to rip around in a more enthusiastic manner, however, then of course the Mustang will be more fun than the Civic.

I thought we were talking about fun cars we might like to own just for the fun of driving them, and you said you had a Mustang for that purpose, and I said, to each his own, but I never thought Mustangs were much fun to drive. If I'm going to get a second car as a summer toy (whether it's $12k or $50k or more) I at least want it to be appreciably more fun than my daily driver. And to me, that one's not. That was my point.

Doesn't really require a page of back and forth; if you like driving your Mustang then more power to you. Was just a comment in a thread about cars that I don't really like the way that one drives. I drove a civic for a couple years and that's not a good comparable, but in principle that's sort of what I'm getting at; I never got much more out of the experience than "well, this is a car". Not, "this is a fun performance-oriented machine".

EDIT: Oh, the RS6 was just what came to mind when I thought about Audi, which was really just a response to my confusion at you suggesting that RWD was a necessary box to check.

I with Sliver on this one.

Bang for the buck, V8 Mustangs are awesome. Total throwback muscle car feel and rumble, for an absolute bargain. Especially if it is a stick. Again that is what a lot of younger buyers don't get. They want push button fast, like a PS3 game. They don't want to work for it. Part of an awesome fast car, in my opinion, is making the driver a part of the go fast equation. In something like a GT-R, a first day driver, or a racing legend, are gonna get the same result out of the car on a drag strip. That's no fun.

I had a decommissioned RCMP interceptor 1989 Mustang LX 5.0 V8 5 spd notchback with vinyl seats, no radio, crank windows I bought at an auction for $2500 in 1997. That thing was hilariously fast for the day, and was an ultra sleeper. It was basicaslly just an engine and wheels. And it was so sketchy in the twisties. Like late 70's 911 Turbo sketchy.

I don't know what they did different to the interceptors, but the thing would destroy same generation Mustang GT's. I think a huge part was the weight, but it was certainly geared and tuned differently. I sent it to a premature grave doing a smoke show, and snapping the drive shaft. It was an honourable death.

Haha, I was thinking about getting one, but I'm a windows-down sort of driver. I hate using air conditioning unless absolutely necessary.

For relatively cheap-to-acquire 'fun' cars, I still have a huge soft spot for the 4th generation F-Body. The Camaro and Firebird / Trans Am.

- They still look pretty decent.
- They come in a hard-top, ragtop, or glass T-top roof (I miss T-tops).
- They produce a great amount of usable power with PLENTY of torque (especially with an LS1 motor).
- They sound fantastic with an aftermarket catback.
- They have a nice wide stance to them that - if you're willing to stiffen the chassis and suspension with cheap-as-borsht aftermarket pieces - gives a really good feel to them when cornering and some confident stability on the highway.

The problem is finding them locally. You're more likely to find these cars for sale in the United States than up here for whatever reason, and for even cheaper prices. People seem to be holding onto them up here.

Bingo^

Rear drive, V8, stick shift, non E-neutered (Traction control/ESP) cars are awesome no matter what side of the car fence you are on.

1) They make you a way better driver if you can actually make one do what it is capable of without all driver aids. Managing the bottom end torque on those cars in corners is not easy.

2) Outside of a Ferrari, there is no better sounding engine than an LT-1 or LS1 at redline. I wish my GTI sounded like an LS1...lol.

New Corvettes are $75000.

They're so cheap that the sales guys at the car show even approached people like me trying to sell them!
