Some days, I certainly feel like it!

I dunno what it is about the those old guys...I've read a ton of books about them, and really enjoyed all the old stories and whatnot. There were definitely some characters from back then!

Team "Give Blood...play hockey" needed a little grit, and that's exactly what Gare brings to the table.

When people say small guys have heart and play tough, those guys probably dont fight some of the toughest guys of their era. Gare fought Gillies, Nystrom, Jonathan, Bridgman, etc. Never one to back down. But he could also put the puck in the net.

Team He Shoots.......He Scooooores!!! is proud to select defenceman - John Sherrat "Black Jack" Stewart.

From LegendsofHockey.com:
Jack "Black Jack" Stewart was the complete package on defense during his dozen years in the NHL. One of the most punishing bodycheckers of his day, Stewart was able to rush with the puck when the need arose. His rock-solid play contributed to Detroit's Stanley Cup wins in 1943 and 1950, and his willingness to resort to a rough style of play when necessary gave him a reputation as one of the game's bad boys.

Stewart helped the Wings capture the regular-season title and the Stanley Cup in 1943 while earning his initial selection to the NHL First All-Star Team. A devastating hitter, Stewart was at his best in the hardest-fought games. Stewart was also admired for his defensive poise. He rarely miscued in his own zone or neglected his position to take a run at an opposing player.

A solid work ethic and excellent stamina were also major features of the rugged defender's game. He was a wiry 185 pounds but extremely powerful. Stewart spent his younger days and off-seasons as a pro on the family wheat farm in Pilot Mound, Manitoba. During World War II, he spent a year with the Montreal RCAF and afterward with the Winnipeg detachment. After the war he returned to Detroit and was teamed successfully with Bill Quackenbush on defense. As a unit the two made life difficult for the opposition, but in different ways. Stewart used brute force and strength to nullify opposing forwards while his partner used positioning and subtle clutching and grabbing to defend the goal.

Stewart was placed on the NHL First All-Star Team in both 1948 and 1949. During this period he waged a legendary battle with Boston forward Milt Schmidt. The two would often exchange devastating but clean open-ice hits against one another that at times gained more attention than the score of the game.
The Wings won the Cup again in 1950, then Stewart was traded to the Chicago Black Hawks. He played his last two seasons in the Windy City, serving as captain of the Blackhawks before leaving the NHL.

From Wiki:
Awards & Achievements

- NHL Second All-Star Team Defense (1946 & 1947)
- Inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1964
- Inducted into the Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame and Museum in 1997
- Selected to Manitoba's All-Century First All-Star Team

For our next pick Team Slapshot are pleased to select as our #3 Centre

Norm Ullman

While a junior star with the Maple Leaf Athletic Club and later the Edmonton Oil Kings of the WCJHL, Norm Ullman caught the eye of Detroit scout Clarence Mohr. There followed an impressive developmental year with the Edmonton Flyers of the WHL, where he received valuable tutoring from coach Norman "Bud" Poile. In 1955-56, he played his first of 13 seasons for the Detroit Red Wings. Ullman went on to record 16 20-goal seasons, including 12 in a row from 1957 to 1969. His consistent production was matched by his durability, as he missed only 21 games in a ten-year span. One of his patented moves was to skate across the other team's blue line, delay, pass the puck to his wings and move down the slot for a return pass or rebound. His powerful arm strength and quick anticipation made him one of the game's toughest forecheckers and faceoff men. More often than not, Ullman would go into the corners or along the boards and emerge with the puck.
Ullman led all playoff scorers with 16 points in 1962-63 even though the Red Wings lost out to Toronto. In 1964-65, he led the league with 42 goals and was selected to the NHL First All-Star Team. For a time, he enjoyed playing on a potent line with Gordie Howe and Alex Delvecchio. He also played with Bruce MacGregor and Paul Henderson on the energetic Hummer Line. On April 11, 1965, during the semifinals, Ullman beat Chicago's Glenn Hall twice in five seconds to establish a new NHL record for the fastest two playoff goals. The following season, he helped the Wings reach the finals, where they lost to Montreal. For the second time in his career, Ullman finished at the head of the post-season scoring list. At one point, coach Sid Abel claimed that Ullman was his most valuable performer.

Totals: 1410 games played. 490 goals, 739 assists for 1229 points.

I like "Norm" as my third line centre.

How did Norm Ullman slip so far down into the draft?

Great pick Jagger!
