He hit 99 in the 8th. Great performance by McGowan.
Heard on Sunday Night Baseball that the Cubs may be interested in AJ Burnett. If we can get some kind of bat, though I'm not sure what the Cubs would be willing to give up, for him I'd say do it.
Hell, I'd do it for a sure fire prospect as well but I doubt "win now to save my job" Riccardi would. The Cubs seem to have lost interest in Felix Pie.

I'd trade Burnett for a case of Baseballs just to know that I got out of that contract. Sure he has great stuff some days, but he has zero consistancy, and a 5 cent Nuke Lalush head when it comes to actually pitching.

Burnett can and probably will opt out of his contract at the end of this season though.
Anything we trade Burnett for has to be better than the picks the Jays will receive for him opting out. Burnett is actually the kind of player that's hard to trade - he's not quite a star, but has a hefty contract so the comp. picks will more than likely be a better return than what we'd get for him in a trade.
The only trade worth doing for Burnett is for a contributing roster player in return. A decent .775-.800 OPS LF would be what I'd be eying in return.
Another question to ask is who takes over the missing spot in the rotation. Purcey clearly isn't up to it.

Good pitching matchup so far. Felix Hernandez is up to the challenge today it seems. Marcum and the pen might need to make this one run they got hold up.

Wells is having a particularily bad day. That's the second time he's struck out with a runner on 3rd and less than 2 outs. Got to find a way to at least ground out there.

Yep, and the M's make them pay for that the next inning by getting a run accross to tie it up.

I just looked at the final Jays AB from MLB.com - they get the leadoff runner one, then Wells and Stairs both strike out?
Was anyone watching, was there a bunt attempted to at least move the runner to scoring position? Were the corners pulled in? I know Wells is hitting 350 in June, but he had an 0-fer going on the day.

Gibbons never bunts when big hitters (3-4-5) are at the plate. Lord knows he should the way Rios has played this year.
If you're not going to call the bunt at least go for the hit-and-run. I'm sure he doesn't want to insult the team's "star" hitters by asking them to draw down a bunt, but at least put the runner in motion.

So frustrating. There is talk of firing Gibbons, but I think it's Riccardi's head who should be on the blocks first. Gibbons is trying things. The Jays don't have a lot of speed but they are hitting and running more than they used to. There have been some bunts, maybe not enough.
I suspect though that Gibby will be gone by the weekend if they lose 2 out of 3 to the Cubs. Bring back Cito?

I don't know if Cito would be the right guy for this team. Cito is better suited to a let them play and I'll keep the ego's in check type of team. He'd probably be perfect for the New York Mets to get them to stop being epic under achievers, maybe even fix up the Tigers. This Jays team probably does have a few ego's, what Baseball team doesnt. But they need a manager who'll try some things and be a bit more active in the game.

I just expect that Riccardi, if he fires Gibby, will want to do something splashy to draw headlines and fan approval to try and save his ass. I can't think of any managers out there that would do this unless Lasorda or Sparky Anderson decide to leave the old folks home.

Even with all of the bashing of Rios, he's not the worst with Runs-In-Scoring-Position:
http://slam.canoe.ca/Slam/Baseball/M...52806-sun.html
Quote:
Every time the Jays get a runner in scoring position, the hitters start turning their bat handles into piles of sawdust. As a team, they are hitting .236 with runners in scoring position. In all other situations, they are hitting .272. And it's not just one or two or three players. It's everybody, especially some of the hitters who are supposed to deliver in those situations.
Overbay is hitting .176 with runners in scoring position. Alex Rios is hitting .219, Scott Rolen .195, Matt Stairs .190. The only player hitting over .300 with RISP is David Eckstein.

Halladay had nothing today.
However, Eckstein flubbed a hard-hit ball that would have been the 3rd out in the bottom of the 2nd, and it was still 0-0 at that point. A single brought home one runner then Reed Johnson jumped on a beachball, hitting one out of the park to make it 4-0. Cubs never looked back.
Also, the Jays have been unable to hit well against yet another mediocre-at-best pitcher.
.500 season, here we come.

It is getting kind of fun to guess how the Jays are going to screw up with the next bases loaded no out situation.
Maybe they can end the season with the record for most triple plays hit into? How about most Loaded base strike outs (my vote)? Worse RISP than the Mariners?!?!?
