|
I can't remember Mercer + 1st ever really being seriously discussed as a return...
Most of the discussion was Holtz + 1st compared to Mercer...maybe something like Casey being added depending on what was going the other way.
The only time I remember 1st + Mercer being discussed was when people had mentioned that New Jersey could be interested in Markstrom + Hanifin...which if you wanted both of them that probably would have been close.

I think the Flames did well with the trade. The #10 pick would have been a homerun, but looking at past trades they got excellent value for a aging netminder. First have generally only been traded for young goalies, not veterans. Kuemper trade should be the closest comparable, he was 21 at the time, there was retention, but only one year left on his contract.
Season Goalie ------- Return
21-22 Darcy Kuemper ------- Connor Timmins, 1st-2022 (#32), 3rd-2024
16-17 Frederik Andersen ------- 1st-2016 (#30 OVR), 2nd-2017
15-16 Martin Jones -------- 1st-2016 (#29 OVR), Sean Kuraly
15-16 Robin Lehner+ ------- 1st-2015 (#21 OVR)
13-14 Cory Schneider ------- 1st-2013 (#9 OVR)
11-12 Semyon Varlamov ------- 1st-2012 (#11 OVR), 2nd-2012

Taking a while to get to 5000

I'm honestly surprised Allen didn't come back in the deal but I guess NJD wants the vet for a backup.
Also if our 3rd pairing is Bahl-Pachal that's fun to say!

Can we get a flow chart for the trade with panthers and Montreal conditions? That would help me understand it way better.

Looking at the big picture of things:
Markstrom
Hanifin
Lindholm
Tanev
Toffoli
Zadorov
for
2024 1st Round Pick (VAN - 28)
2025 1st Round Pick (Top 10 Protected - NJD)
2026 1st Round Pick (Unprotected - VGK)
2024 2nd Round Pick (DAL - 62)
2023 3rd Round Pick (NJD - 80 - Suniev)
2024 3rd Round Pick (VGK - 84)
2026 3rd Round Pick (VAN)
2024 4th Round Pick (NJD - 107)
2024 5th Round Pick (CHI - 131)
Sharangovich
Kuzmenko
Miromanov
Bahl
Brzustewicz
Grushnikov
Jurmo
All up that's a pretty tidy first year of work from Craig Conroy.

I don't get why so many people are concerned about the Flames losing their pick. The BOLDED is the most likely option.
Florida is in the Cup final, their 2025 pick will most likely not be a lottery pick.
The Flames are looking like a team headed for a top 10 pick.
Seems like it's pretty likly that the Habs get the Panthers 2025 first.

We'll see how it all shakes out in the end, but looks like a much kick off to a rebuild/retool than what occurred under Feaster.
Hanowski, Agostino, Cundari, Berra and a couple late firsts? haha
Although Connie has/had more assets to work with.

Why does a rebuilding team acquire a lot of picks? Because they don't all work out, so the more chances the better.
Conroy is taking the same strategy with defensemen - acquire as many as possible, and see who develops.
Kylington (26)
Mironanov (26)
Pachal (24)
Bahl (23)
Okhotiuk (23)
Solovyov (23)
Kuznetzov (22)
Jurmo (22)
Grushnikov (21)
Morin (19)
Brzustewicz (19)
Hurtig (19)
If the Flames get 3 good players out of that group, they will have done very well.
Conroy is doing EXACTLY what he should be doing.

I think this gives Conroy a shot at getting his under 23 year old center. He's got the pieces to do it now.

I believe he was on a pro staff... IIRC he was on the Flames pro staff. I vaguely recall him being on a podcast talking about the draft and saying that he asked Chris Snow if he should do a full workup on a guy for the draft and Snowy told him no because he wasn't going to be available. Or words to that effect.

You can never have enough depth. All depth all the time. Maybe we’re going for the Nashville no stars model.
