The pitch to the city & province was probably easy.

Calgary is already top 5 city in North America.
Huge influx of people.
Oil is doing well.

Something like this puts the city on a bigger pedestal.

Someone like Edwards spinning that will surely make all those public servants salivate thinking of how 'they' made this happen on their watch.

Oh well.

Not sure where there's funding going towards the green line? Has this been released? The roads are all getting worked on to support the arena... there's studies that show gain to the city from new investments after a new arena is built are limited.

It's a ####ty deal for the city and province. Billionaires making away like bandits.
Nothing was released, during Q&A, green line was mentioned.

My guess the province is covering some of it.

While I agree if there is no new rink, it means bye bye Flames, I've never been really worried that it won't get done (just worried how long). To me it's clear:

- The NHL wants to be in Calgary.
- We still have owners interested in being in Calgary
- Both the City and the Province are interested in having the NHL in Calgary, and are also interested in a new Event Centre in the city.

Given the above, and while there were and likely still will be hiccups along the way in regards to the "how and when" it gets done, I still don't think there's actually a realistic threat that it won't get done at this point (or at any point prior to today).

After CalgaryNext and then the cancellation of the deal last December, I’m just not ready to be hurt again.

Agree with your points

Plus this development will occur, with or without the Flames

Calgary has no choice but to make improvements to their downtown core.

You can tell the city took it on the chin by Sharp’s and Gondek’s responses to the increased costs.

Gondek, who helped scuttle the old deal, pretty much said “now we’ve transparently included all infrastructure scope”.

While Sharp, who got brought in to put things back on the rails, pretty much said “ya well that’s just the cost of moving forward today”. She was incredibly impressive.

The total sticker price went up by, what, $500M. Only a fool would believe that’s all infrastructure scope inclusion. The city are wearing that plus inflation, with a nice little partial face saving bailout from the province.

The next cabinet has to approve the deal AFTER an election.

It always been about how much the city and province would bend over for CSEC. That time was now.

So is the original design of the arena the same or they going to change it?

Similar to previous deal I would think.

The event centre location is currently on Stampede owned land.

So the city gets the land required for the event centre, and the Stampede gets the land the Saddledome is currently on, which is currently owned by the city.

Question was asked again (after the clip you have shown), Sharp reply was we would expect the government to stand by the deal.

So she is buying votes.

Hopefully this turns the rest of the province against the UCP and the NDP votes this through.

This is a big deal for the City and the Flames. It means the team is not going anywhere which is fabulous news. For those who say there was never any risk of relocation, you simply cannot say that with certainty.

As a native Calgarian and Flames season ticketholder since DAY ONE (started with my dad in the Corral, who was also born in Calgary but passed away 10 years ago), this is a great day for a City whose best days, in many respects in my view, may be behind us.

Just fantastic news. Congratulations to all in getting this deal done.

It’s being expanded and rotated 90 degrees on the lot, will take significant rework of the plans at the very least.

Believe it’s the Stampede gives up the lots where the new arena is going, and receives the Saddledome footprint post demo. That’s not new though. Was always going to be that way.

edit: answered already
