When it comes to Lady Gaga, I've always thought of her as a great performer first and foremost. And hey, here's proof if proof were needed - she's performing someone else's music, and it still looks like an amazing show. And I don't even like Metallica. At all.

So I'd say she's got it in spades, but the it that she's got is a different it than you appear to be concerned with.
Well, people like what they like, and I don't mean be taken too seriously.

But also, that Metallica thing was kind of hard to listen to, just doesn't know how to fit her voice into that, just sounds like a bad mashup, and that's the thing she just doesn't have IMO. That musical touch which the great, and even the really good, artists just have.

I go to a LOT of live shows, always have. There's been years when I've seen more than a hundred bands, and even this year with covid I take my time to check out streams and the rare live events available, so I'm still catching a couple of gigs a month, and there's always been the kinds of artists who are technically perfectly competent, but just lack the ability to do the little things that make all the difference, and that's Gaga for me.

Plus it's not like she's technically anything special, there's plenty of amateurs out there that would just absolutely blow her off the stage in a pure singing or playing contest.

Of course if we go outside of musicality, she definitely has that elusive "it". She can build a show and an image, capture imaginations with her outfits and just be an interesting phenomenon. That takes genuine talent that I give her full and utterly sincere credit for.

There has always been a huge difference between being a musician and being an artist, and the latter has nothing to with things such as musical talent or skill even. Gaga might not have a lot of musical talent to bring to the table, but she's definitely an artist to be reckoned with... And I do appreciate her putting in the work too.

I guess she really is the new Madonna.

Also something funny.

As a fellow professor, I have to laugh at how much we all bend over backwards for our students.

Digital processing of some kind. I saw an acapella version she did and her voice still sounded great but it was more realistic instead of... enhanced.

This young girl nails it. I grew up with this song and can close my eyes and I feel like i'm listening to the actual drummer in the band. You can see her smile at 5:58 of the video as she knows she got it right.

Yeah at the beginning of the video you can see the kitten is the first that appears down the path.
