That sentence makes no sense. You don't have to trade them for picks/prospects. You can trade them for established young stars because that's their value, they are established young stars themselves.

It would only make sense to trade Gaudreau for a better center than Monahan or Monahan+ for a better center.

I just don't see who is available for Gaudreau/Monahan+ that is big upgrade on Monahan. Which contending/bubble team has a surplus center that would be fair value for Gaudreau/Monahan+.

The difficulty in trading either Johnny or Monny is their current salaries for the points is quite low compared to the current market rate. All the new contracts seems to be 7/8 million per season. Despite whatever shortcomings both players have, and they do have them, good luck trading for a player for a similar dollar amount.

Best case scenario when it comes to salary comparable is to trade for a player who may have the potential to reach similar points who has the same or lower salary. Similar to the Hamilton Feland trade.

Here's the thing with trades though - they are judged immediately, but quite often that judgement turns out to be not so much faulty as short-sighted.

How many times we see a trade where we decide one team destroyed the other but it turns out even, or the other team wins? It all depends on the players and how they do in new situations. Or you might trade a productive player for a lesser productive one, but one who fits your team better.

If Couturier is actually available then that would be interesting but would you trade Gaudreau for Couturier or Monahan plus Kylington?

Hasn't Nolan Patrick looked kind of meh?

Yes, to both. Patrick had health issues, but looks like he is just about to bust out. My opinion only of course.

I follow the Flyers pretty closely and Patrick seems a lot like a Bennett situation where if he wants to be successful in the NHL hes going to have to redefine himself as he isn't close to a bonafide NHL star.

On the other hand though, Couturier took a really long time to develop into an offensive center, as he had been thrown into a defensive role and really ran with it.

Why would Couturier be available? Makes no sense.

Couturier should be the last guy available in Philly. You'd have to think they'd be looking at dealing Voracek or even Giroux before getting to that point.

Might as well just trade for Barkov too, hell see if Mackinnon is available after the playoffs

On the Athletic Duhatschek was doing a 'what if' scenario for trading Johnny and wondered with the Devils drafting Jack Hughes, does that make Hischier available for the right deal. If they don't think they'll be able to resign Hall, maybe Johnny is a good fit to slot in on the LW.

Does that actually make the Flames better though?

Could give up Frolik but it would have to happen now to make sense

Monahan can turn it around still. Let's not be so quick to throw him on the trash heap.

I move:
- Brodie- I would take picks in this case, to reduce total salary. Still want value though! Ideally he gets traded for a young player with promise and a pick.
- Frolik: I think he can get you some picks, Glenny style
- neal: either in a swap for ladd or okposo, or more ideally in a pseudo dump scenario. I would use some picks to help that happen
-Stone: for whatever we can.
-jankowski: I think someone will take a flyer on him and might give us a 2nd or something. Ideally he could be traded for a more hardnosed third/4th line centre or winger a la Josh Anderson or tom Wilson. Any up and comers in that mold out there?

Dont sign:
Mike smith- good job in the playoffs, best of luck in the future elsewhere

Sign:
Tkachuk to a bridge
Rittich to a 3 year deal at medium salary
Pitch hard for Duchene or Panarin
Pitch lehner

Gaudreau-Duchene-Lindholm
Tkachuk-Monahan-bennett
Dube-Backlund-Janko trade player
Mangiapane-ryan-hathaway

Gio-Andersson
Hanafin-hamonic
Valimaki- new Russian dman
Fantenberg

Lehner
Rittich
