Bad things tend to happen to good people, and NHL coaches definitely have a shelf life.

While we all appreciate Harley's quotes, the fact remains that his record here, short of an amazing playoff run last year, was crap. We weren't evolving this year, goaltending monster or not. The special teams have been a bit of a joke, and some days, the compete level hasn't been what we've become used to. His system seemed to work for a short time, but once word got out, that was it.

Consistency was a major problem with this staff, and I for one am happy to see a change. The time is right, and there are several good names out there.

I hope Boudreau is brought in, as I see him as the best fit, and what the team needs desperately. I also want to see some good assistants brought in.

I’m always amazed these sportscasters and announcers can call the game with McDavid’s **** in their mouths all the time.

I actually agree with some of you post, especially the several good names out there part. Not shocked that if Treliving and crew aren't sold on Hartley long term that they may be acting now because they will need to snap up one of the coaches they like before it's too late.

But I keep seeing the record thing come up. I get it, results oriented business, losing not an option, etc..... What were peoples expectations on his record given the team he took over and the point in their development lifecycle. He took over a terrible team that had yet to start a much needed rebuild, then had the first 3 years of a rebuilding team. To me, he put up way more wins that I ever would have expected from this group if you'd asked me when he took over what to expect. And it wasn't all just from last season, 2nd half of the year before was great. Of course, this past year wasn't the best, and recency effect is very valid, but really, in my opinion his record here was better than what it should have been. He might no be the coach of the future for this club and I respect that, but I'd say he got the most out of his line up.

I find it amusing at how many people assume Hartley is a good person outside of hockey.

Why? I know for a fact that he is a good person, and have had innumerable pleasant interactions with him.

Do you have any experience to dispute that notion to share? Or you just like to stir the pot?

Know him, know a lot of people who know him. Before he made it to the NHL he was pretty prejudice towards English people. I bit my tongue while he was here, now that he's gone I'm glad.

I'm not saying that statement is right or wrong, but coming from a Franco-Ontarian family, it really wouldn't shock me at all

I think the closest thing the Flames ever had to an English person is Owen Nolan.

He's from Quebec, isn't he? I heard that Quebecois in general are kinda prejudice toward English speaking people, unless you're visibly minority. I don't know, I ran into him a few times and he was very nice and courteous toward me. But then, I'm a visibly minority.

He's from a 99 percent French speaking town in Ontario.

Being in the public eye, I'm sure he was able to keep his true feelings private like a politician. I worked at the same place he used to work before he got into coaching. I think if Québec would have separated, he would have moved to Québec (at least he used to speak like he would have).

Yeah, we already went around on that. The rules for fired coaches under contract was asked and answered, but the person I was replying to clarified that they were asking about compensation for taking a coach from another team's minor league affiliate. That hasn't had any formalized compensation scheme attached to it.

That was 20 years ago. People change.

Well it was more of a canned statement more than anything, but I can reasonably assume that because he was a coach in the NHL, had the media involved in his life and surrounded himself with professional athletes and other people in an entertainment industry that he likely isn't sitting at home wiping his ass with kittens or polishing the leather on his SS outfit.

Loved Bob's positive attitude, he seems like a great motivator. I don't think his system was strong and some of the players that he put on the ice at certain times were head-scratching... Not sure if he was trying to break players out of slumps or over-valued their skills, but they were the wrong decisions. I was okay with him doing another year, but I think Treliving did the inevitable sooner and it's the right move.

A bit surprised by this, but despite the fact that I really like the culture Bob created here, his coaching style was really nothing special. Not really upset or happy.
