Glad to see the Jays were out with that contract. 180-190mil might have been reasonable, but 217mil is going to be an albatross for the Sox by the end of that deal.

There's a 3 year opt out in the contract, so it might not have to get to albatross levels

Damn, I knew he was gone but he didn't have to stay in AL East or even in the AL. Wish you nothing but failure, Price and Red Sox.

Jays didn't even try apparently
Quote:
The Blue Jays did not make an offer to free-agent pitcher David Price, who signed a seven-year, $217-million contract Tuesday with the Boston Red Sox, a baseball source told TSN.
The source also told TSN that the Blue Jays will not make contract offers to free agent pitcher Zack Greinke or to first baseman Chris Davis.
"If you sign a pitcher for $30 million a year, it affects your ability to build a team around him," the baseball source told TSN.
The Jays are now focused on hiring a full-time general manager, and expect to get that done in the next few weeks, and are looking to add a utility infielder, backup catcher and bullpen depth. The Blue Jays have already had talks to re-sign free agent pitcher Mark Lowe.

Here I was thinking Boston was using game theory to scare others away. Who's option is it? Team or Player? What a massive contract.
To the point, initially it bothered me that the Jays didn't even offer a contract but anything offered compared to that would have likely been an insult. Greinke's going to be paid $33m+ in comparison. Where's this money coming from?
Also, totally frustrating to be a Jays fan this offseason so far.

Red sox are going to be a powerhouse soon enough, maybe even this year. Tons of good, young players, better watch out.

That is an astronomic number holy cow. That is basically $200,000 per game in a 162 game season. Obviously he's not pitching every game, so the number is even higher, but he still comes to work on those days.
Just crazy how much money is in baseball.

$ Per season = 31,000,000
33 starts * 105 pitches per start = 3,465 pitches
= $8,947 per pitch!

Yeah, Boston is set-up pretty well... immensely fortunate to have Bradley, Betts, Bogarts, and Swihart all coming up at the same time. That's countered by what big busts Ramirez and Sandoval have been but yeah they'll be in the conversation for a while.

Yeah if that is where the range was then I don't blame the Jays for not being heavily involved.
It will make trading Norris for him hurt even more though. Sucks to give up a top prospect and then have the guy you traded for sign with a top rival.

Yeah... crazy amount of money in baseball these days. Manfield should send Netflix and the inventor of PVR's an annual "Thank You" card.

He's never going to opt out of a remaining 124M dollars over 4 years at the age of 34. He'd have to be insane.

Reports are the Jays never even made an offer on Price. That's going to upset a lot of these new Jays fans in Toronto.

He will if he thinks that he can get 130M over those same 4 years.

I can't see him getting that. He's really a power pitcher. When he loses that, he's going to have a severe reduction in ability to get players outs. I would have liked the Jays to give him an offer so we had him for a run next year and over the course of Donaldson/Martin/Tulo's contract while accepting that deal would likely be an albatross come year 4-5.

The Jays have essentially not reinvested a dollar of the money they made last season. They wouldn't have made an offer to Price regardless of the Boston offer, but now Rogers will have that to hang their hat on.
I don't mind them not signing Price, but only adding Happ and Chavez in a season when the Championship is in sight is spitting on the fans that support the team. I'm sure the usual suspects will be on here telling me i'm negative and it's only November, but it must be starting to be evident by now that nothing is going to be done this off season, especially after reading that TSN article.

Or if he's happy with his millions and wants to go to a contender if Boston isn't it.
