Wouldnt that be funny if Markstron and Lack both turned out to be good for the canucks and then in two years they had another huge goalie controversy?

Be funnier if Lack regressed, they both sucked, and they have a goalie controversy of another kind.

Agreed, besides Gillis will probably be gone in a couple years and maybe by then they'll have found a competent management team to deal with situations like these.

It isn't a disaster yet. It easily can be. It depends what these guys become. Matthias gets more consistant, markstrom plays at an NHL level and horvat develops and we're happy. That doesn't happen? Then yeah, disaster.
You also need to consider the 6.18M$ reduction in CAP allocated to goalies, as a result of these trades. That can buy a useful free agent.

CAP for Luongo+Schneider was 9.33M$. CAP for Lack+Markstrom+15%Luongo is 3.15M$.

I always wonder why all the nucks fans come out of the ether to post here in their darkest hours.
If i were a canucks fan and my team just slipped in it, i would not be seeking out the flames forum for trade rationalization.

Markstrom will fit right in, in Vancouver.

Why trade for an aging goalie? Do they think the will be contenders in the next 3 years? They've got some pieces in Barkov and Huberdeau, but they will be a few more years.
It sure can help develop your defensemen if you have a legit #1 there near the end of the rebuild. The young defensemen can make mistakes and not have it end up the net every single time.

They should have a few strong pieces now with Barkov, Huberdeau, Gudbranson all top 3 picks and Bjugstad and Kulikov as recent 1st rounders as well, with Drew Shore in the 2nd. Another top 5 pick and it should time to start turning the corner pretty quick. In 2011 they had 7 picks in the top three rounds. In 2010 they had 7 picks in the top three rounds including 3 first rounders. If the rebuild needs several more years than they've botched it. Time for them to start building some important vets around their young talent.

I like their timing on adding Luongo. I think it is a smart move by Tallon. Markstrom looks far from guaranteed now. If you can trade a questionable goaltending prospect for a true #1 near the end of your rebuild you do it.

He actually did. Said the trade came a year late. Didn't elaborate as far as I know.

The reason the whole handling of the goalie mess is indefensible is the Canucks turned two starting goalies into nothing but potential. There are no sure things, not even in the slightest, that they received for either of their starting caliber goalies. What is the hardest thing to find in the NHL? Starting goalies. And the Canucks traded two of them for possibilities. It's like they traded two winning lottery tickets for a couple scratch cards. They better hope they scratch off a winner because if the players acquired amount to nothing this is a franchise altering trade in a very bad way. Hopefully they amount to less than nothing.

From what I´ve seen him this season he isn't an NHL goalie at the moment, no other way of putting it. He got outplayed and lost the back up spot to Scott Clemmensen. Bad defense or not.

Also I don't know what this potential really is unless you are referring to his size. The guy drops on his knees on every single shot he faces and plays deep in the net ultimately losing his size advantage. Also doesn't play the angles well and gives up weak goals as a result. Just a bad goalie at the moment.

The return is really good.

Also, what is with some of the love'n people have for Luongo now that he is not a Canuck? The guy is one of the biggest divers in the NHL.

Oh no.
A goalie flops around when contact is made.
What a terrible person.

Probably because he got treated like garbage by a total garbage franchise and managed to stay 100% professional. I think all of us wanna see him win a Cup so he can piss all over Canuck fans. All he did was be the best goalie they've ever had, and all they did was treat him like dog excrement.

See that's the problem. Being a few hours south of Edmonton we have heard that same phrase weekly for a half decade now so you can understand why Flames fans are laughing at the return for two NHL starting goaltenders.

Luongo is an odd case. No one ever gives him proper credit. He's either very overrated by those that like him, or extremely underrated by those that don't.

He's one of the best in the NHL, has a tendency to let go of bad goals in big games. He's also capable of stealing wins and carrying a team in the playoffs but while having a horrid game mixed in.

See it's odd, usually if you carry you don't let go of bad goals at bad times. He did both.

There was an unusual amount of Luongo hate here because he was a Canuck. Now that he's not, the tainted glasses are off.

Given the pitiful return, everyone is in shock.

Luongo should have netted more than potential. He should have had a known commodity in return.

I don't think the issue is it was Luongo for Markstrom. It's the fact that there is no big piece coming back. Then the secondary player (Markstrom) becomes the primary and even if he turns out there is no known commodity for insurance incase he doesn't.

Gillis should have got something to help the team now (even if only grit and leadership to help with the rebuild).
