With Suncor, The Bow, 225 - Sixth, and Telus Sky, Calgary's got a sweet area for their tallest buildings now. I hope that a new tallest gets built right across from Telus Sky to keep the perimeter growing in the future. The Centre Street/7 Avenue/1st Street/6 Avenue block could become the most significant in the entire city.
Poor Calgary Tower though. Skyscraper by skyscraper, it's getting less and less significant. Needs to raise it's game up and dress up some more. Or that and get taller.

I remember the Calgary Tower guy saying that some 'interesting changes' were planned and that they would really modernize the building. That was a couple of years ago, so I'm not sure if that plan was quashed. Hopefully he wasn't referring to the Palliser twins..
On an engineering topic.. would it even be feasible to make the CT taller?

If heard that they could add height to it if they wanted to. I don't think more height is an active project though, whereas the Palliser twins are. Their design is being revised though, so hopefully we'll get something that better compliments the tower.

I've said many times... With an unlimited budget, anything is possible.
My vote is to leave it like it is. It shows us how much we've grown as a city.

I agree. One day it will be a very neat historic building, and something people will marvel at as our former tallest (by far) and quite a distinct building. Sure right now it's kind of ho-hum in some ways, but everything is when it hits that awkward period between being shiny and new and old and cool. We don't need to tear down all of our awkward teenagers. We could use some old men around.

Plus, it's still the world's tallest Olympic Torch.

They are probably talking about the base of the tower, all the Brutalist concrete architecture there, and maybe the Palliser twins. I'm pretty sure the actual tower will be left alone except for interior renovations that happen every now and again.

The Calgary Tower, IMO, is one of the ugliest structures in the core. I would hope that it does get updated at some point... massively.

It's iconic, it's retro. What do you want done to it?

I've always thought it might look cool if they built a a frame around it to completely change the shape and exterior but keep the observation deck. Make it look like a mini-shard or something.

The top of it is iconic and retro... but that long concrete wang is just ugly. With The Bow finished and when Telus Sky is done going down Center St has the potential to be one of the nicest walks/drive into the core. But once you reach the end of it the Tower is just... meh.

I'm in favour of it, and like how it has created a tiered building height from closer to the river rising as you go south. It gives a great visual look.

I do agree with your viewpoint. Honestly, I don't really care where they build them, I just want to see Calgary with higher buildings.
I know this sounds really dumb on my part, but it totally didn't even occur to me the simple solution to the bylaw would be to build it further back from the river.

The top is ugly as hell, it`s definitely a reminder of brutalist-type architecture from the 60's which I`ve just never been fond of. The concrete shaft is cold and sterile.
I would not change the original structure as that would be too costly, but build a new envelope around the entire structure from top to bottom In a more harmonious shape. Just tossing first-thought ideas out there, but that`s what I would do if I had money to do so.

Be happy they got rid of the yellow.

We can keep one brutalist building. It's ok. They've almost finished knocking down/repurposing the rest.

I hear the short list for designing the central library is quite something. Pretty much the who's who of global architecture (have not seen the full list myself, I understand 7 teams, but heard a couple names). Exciting.

^Couldn't we have a design competition and get local children to design it for much cheaper?

Anxiously awaiting Rick Bell's response to whatever architect/design we choose and what a waste of money it is to have iconic buildings/infrastructure built in our city when we desperately need more interchanges
