i guess this thread is a cautionary tale for anyone living in Airdrie who is hoping that the new Saddledome is going to be built out there.......even though it would only be a 20 minute drive home for all of us.

Coyotes win as Glendale Council pledges more money
http://www.azfamily.com/news/Coyotes...148626725.html
Monday, during an eight-hour budget session, the Glendale City Council voted to budget another payout for next season.
During the same meeting, the Council also voted to raise property taxes and the sales tax. Council members said the Coyotes fund is not directly related to the tax hike, but another city official called it a "contributing factor."
Councilwoman Yvonne Knaack explained her 'yes' vote. "We own that arena," she said. "We have the debt regardless of the Coyotes. The best case scenarios is the Coyotes stay here to play the games and bring 500,000 people to the arena."
Knaack added that she is "most definitely" confident in the Jamison deal.
Councilmember Norma Alvarez was a 'no' vote on continued Coyotes funding, calling it too much of a risk.
"Sometimes we have to admit we've made a mistake. We haven't gotten much money from the Coyotes," Alvarez said after the meeting.
Knaack and the others voting 'yes' say while they budgeted for another potential payout to cover next season's Coyotes' financial losses, they do not expect to have to pay.

I'm not surprised that way of thinking is pushing further allocations, it seems to be a matter of minimizing loss and at least having the potential for gain for Glendale right now, as it should be.

So basically they are going to screw John Q Taxpayer to help pay for a team that probably is on life support regardless if they play another year there or not. Your average taxpayer there is most likely not a hockey fan and yet has to help foot the bill for the team? Not right at all.

The average tax payer is footing the bill for that arena regardless of whether or not there's an NHL team in it or not. At least with a tenant there's a chance to regain some of those expenditures by drawing people to the municipality.

No there isn't. The Coyotes have shown year after year they can't draw and continue to lose money, it isn't going to change now. Get other attractions in there, the Coyotes being tenants there just make the situation worse.

I've never in my life seen such effort being propped into such a sinking ship for so long. Just move the f'n team to Quebec already and play in the Colisee for now. This headache should have been off the hands of the entire league by now... such a distraction.

How does it make it worse? They're paying to manage that arena regardless of whether or not the tenant is the Coyotes or 6 hobos gathered around a flaming barrel.
And what other attractions do you suggest would fill 41+ dates?

This isn't an NHL action, this is a vote by the City of Glendale. The NHL has nothing to do with it, this is simply the city resolving to put up what they have over the past two years, it in no way prevents the league from moving to Quebec.

i am going from memory, but i beleive that this would represent the third payment of $25,000,000 by CoG to the NHL - at this point why does the CoG just buy the team?
I would not be happy if I was a resident of the CoG.

Ya. At first I was surprised that they decided to fork over more money. But either way they'll be forking money over, so makes sense to gain some profit from it that has potential to grow.
What a messy situation.

And the NHL's plan works again. Quebec City not yet ready, trot out Jamison to the council and grab another $25 million. Next summer, goodbye!

You are confusing the Coyotes' situation with Glendale's. It is, frankly, silly to suggest that the Coyotes being there makes Glendale's situation worse. Losing 45-50 openings a year makes their situation worse.
Regardless of how much money the Coyotes lose on hockey operations, If they bring 500,000 fans to the rink per season, most of those fans are coming from neighbouring municipalities. They are spending money in Glendale, helping Glendale gain tax revenue.
Is it enough to justify the continual payouts? I can't say. But the core logic does make some sense.

Well if there was another market ready to host a team an immediate move may have been an option, but alas that's not the case.

Actually, I do think that Quebec City and Kansas City would be the two best options if an immediate move had to happen. I would think they could immediately take an NHL franchise on, but I can in no way prove that at this point. Last year, Winnipeg did it in a pretty quick turnaround time. I do know the Colisee needs renovations, but would they be able to get them done before September? It is Quebec, so I don't know...

The sense I get is that Quebec could host the team next year, but that realistically another year at minimum would be needed to get things where they need to be. There's really no rush for the NHL, especially if Glendale is going to approve another payment, as the Quebec market isn't going anywhere.
As for KC, I haven't heard of any parties who are interested in owning a team in the market. They have a great building owned by AEG, who is already heavily involved with the NHL, but there doesn't seem to be anyone coming forward looking to move a team there.
