It sort of worked last year if you figured it out, but now it seems like they've finally worked that aspect of the game out.

Totally, and the CPU does it when you completely shut them off defensively. Smarter AI FTW

I skipped NHL 11 because I was too poor to spend 70 bones on a game. But I will likely be picking this up for PS3, so I'll be in on the league. Although I will likely not be very good as video games generally arent necessarily my forte.

Same as NHL11, easy to turn off thank god. Auto backskate is terrible, makes it almost impossible to play defense.

i honestly might give it a try. each day i play a game or two and get more excited for the release.
the one reason i am sure that the gameplay changes are legit? when i play as the goalie, i finally feel like the AI knows what its doing. since i was always too cheap to buy boosts, and wanted to unlock at least a decent amount of goalie boosts, i spent time the last couple years playing goalie BAP. the last couple years it was so painful playing that way as it meant watching the AI battle each other in a stupidity competition. they play each other so much smarter now. while i am sure they are still exploitable, at least their baseline is much improved.
i also really feel like the game is improved both ends for single player modes... i think the offensive zone rewards honest, legit hockey more than ever. i have never been good at cheese goals, so i have always cycled the puck, got it to the point, got it on net, and tried for dirty goals; just like real life. for the first time, i feel like i have a decent chance at scoring when i play that way.
additionally, playing defense is much more fun and challenging. why? because instead of the computer making 15 laser passes in order to set up the most unrealistic scoring chance, they also play much more authentic hockey. they take normal shots and generate chances that way.
to me, the little things help like active goalies and such, but i feel the gameplay has taken leaps this year. perhaps they spent so much time the last couple years working on features and such and thats why gameplay suffered?

Speaking of playing as goalie, those net battles make deflections waaay more scary/prominent this year. Wowza!
I played a bit today, and it seems like you have to be a little more agressive in positioning than in the past.

Just played the demo for a bit last night, and while the changes aren't massive they have definitely improved the gameplay. The fact that getting the puck to the net and looking for rebounds is a viable strategy is probably enough on its own to get me to buy. Add in the subtle changes to the hitting physics and I'm pretty much sold.
I'm really hoping that the off ice portion of BaP has been tweaked, with the auto sim feature that mode could be great if the off ice portion has a bit more interaction. I'd like to see demands for trades and a system where your play is rewarded/punished on a more constantly evolving course. Hit a slump and get busted down to the third line, get hot and find yourself on the forst PP unit. It seems like your ice time will be a little more realistic (assuming you go to the banch when called) so beign a 4th liner means something this year, which would make a more accurate roster progression all the more rewarding.

Honestly, I'll be sold if BaP's skip to next shift isn't broken and your ice time fixed. I'm wondering why my 18 year old player starts every game in the NHL because he got 3 goals in the preseason.

I'm going to give the demo another chance sometime today, with all the positive impressions maybe I am missing something.

I'm a big be a pro player, but I would like to see the outside games side a little more interactive.
Practice time would be cool if you could use it to boost skills
An area where you can see how much time is left in your contract would be nice too.
Being able to demand trades
being able to get NMC/NTC
I'd love to see an olympic type tournament that you can play for or a world championship if you don't make the playoffs would be groovy
Improved coaching interaction where its possible that the coach gets pissed off at your lone wolf ways and benches you, or doesn't dress you.
I got kicked out of 5 games in a row for hitting from behind (it was the playoffs I was playing the Canucks so sue me) suspensions would be nice
I would like to see random fights not involving your player, it would be cool to see Iggy get into a brawl with some Canuck and then you can grab Burrows in a scrum and pummel him.
The ability to agitate, whether through trash talk or stick pokes or whatever that gets the opposition mad and they spend a shift or two just chasing you and trying to kill you.

They also need a turtle button and a dive button, but if you don't time the turtle button right you get pummeled, if you don't time the dive right you get a diving penalty.

I like the animation where players sit up on the bench before they change lines. Nice touch.

Agreed. I have said it before, the best BAP ever was the very first time it was introduced in Madden. You came into the league as a legit rookie and had to earn your time. Preseason games, 3rd downs, subbing for injuries. You had to take advantage of any chance you got to earn starts. Ever since then, every other game with BAP mode had you starting on the first line/1st string every game with no prior experience

I'm playing very aggressive on those point shot. I go to the edge of the crease. (In NHL 10 and 11, i usually just stay half way between goalline and edge.)
But I have yet to trigger any auto desperation save....

You also got to move into bigger houses, get tattoos and funky hair doos, you got movie roles, paintings and as you got more popular you got advertising opportunities which unlocked skills. When you retired if you were good enouigh you got a bust in the hall of fame.

On MLB: Road to the Show you start in AA and have to work your way up. Before my PS3 Hard Drive died I had just started my sixth season and had just played my first full season in the big leagues as a pitcher.
But yeah, I agree. Advancing in BAP is far too easy.

Re: BAP
On the one hand, you shouldn't be able to advance too quickly, on the other, if I'm freakin' awesome, the coach should play me!
I'm not Matt Pelech out there, I'm Dion Freakin' Phaneuf. If I score 2 goals in my first game and average a point per game through my first 10, I shouldn't be benched/scratched played on the fourth line for the first 20 games.
That was infuriating to me. A+ Stats, B team play A positioning = 3rd line winger.
PUT ME OUT THERE COACH! I AM KILLING GUYS!
