According to my doctor, it is better to carry a little extra weight than to smoke.

That sound similar to my story. I was 185 lbs when I quit, then went up to 230lbs after quitting. Now I am bout 215lbs, so 30 lbs more than my smoking weight.

It really sucks. It was more than 10 years ago that I quit. Honestly, I think losing weight is harder than quitting smoking, but I do feel way more healthier now despite the extra weight.

Statistically, quitting smoking is the most impactful modifiable health choice you can make. More than diet or exercise

Today for me is 3 months now.

According to quit pro. that is.

-920 smokes not smoked.that's crazy, how many empty coffee cans is that full of butts? gross, I guess when you're smoking it's easy to not think of the numbers, but that's alot of smokes, and I wasn't even smoking that much near the end compared to years ago, when it was 25/day minimum.

-$620
-almost 9 more days added on to my life.

My big thing has always been quitting around now, and then starting in April or May when golfing starts. Now that I have a 3 month head start on this, I am hoping I can stick it out through the summer months.

Years ago when I tried to quit, you always had friends, co workers, wives, girlfriends that smoked and that made it hard. In the past 3 months I've only come within range of smelling smoke twice and that was out walking the dog in the park and twice walked by some teenager smoking.
A lot easier these days, when no one smokes.

This was something I was worried about as well, smoked a wack load on the golf course and drank a lot of beer. Quit cold turkey last April 5 and I have not looked back, no cravings at all not with drinking or golf. I just made the choice not to smoke and I think the big thing that has made it easy to quit after 30yrs of smoking was it was just simply time to do so ( I was committed ). This is a chance to improve the game. Smoking messes with everything and by the middle of the season my short game was getting crazy good because you start to get more sensitive fingers and hands.

GOOD LUCK!

Failure. I just can't be in a room full of chain smokers and booze and win. I had 3 smokes over the course of the night which wasn't bad considering. I still consider myself quit. I haven't had a smoke since and I don't crave one now. I'm not going to beat myself up over it. I think I'll have to lay off the booze longer and not put myself in those situations that are doomed from the start.

Thanks I appreciate the concern. It's nice to have a sound board on this that isn't my wife. She don't understand.

As long as you are trying to not smoke this will never describe the situation I quit smoking at least 10 times before I quit smoking

GOOD LUCK!
You quit just before golf season, so a definite accomplishment.
I look forward to better chipping, never thought of that, that's way better than extra days added on to my life. The thing that killed me about smoking and golfing was golfing with my Dad, as I hid my smoking now for the last 10 years or so. Anyways, you have those bad shots and alls you can think about is how much you want to smoke but can't. Not to mention just the general smoking a ton while golfing aspect, good or bad shots. Hated it.

Like you, I think I've reached the point that if I don't quit now, I might as well just not, ever.

PS, I've gained about 20lbs, but, that is fairly normal this time of the year. If I don't lose it in the summer, I'll blame it on smoking.

It's not a failure, it's a minor setback. In those circumstances, only having 3 isn't a game changer for you and if you don't have the desire to start up again and haven't yet, you're doing well.

as one of the first posters on your thread, i feel as though i would be entitled to a portion of the money you will be saving by not smoking... an estimation:

Pack of cigarettes: $10.00
Pack per day (7 days in a week): $70.00
52 weeks in a year: $3,640.00 ($1,820.00 for pack per 2 days)

$3640.00 @ 17 years $61,880

* I took into consideration a few things when this absolutely rough number came up... it was off and on, is it for sure a pack a day? etc etc.. but think of all the implicit costs... travelling to get smokes, paying for a gf or friends or whatever on occasion, sharing smokes thus doubling your "consumption"*

All the power to you guys, your kids, kids will one day be stoked you did it!

I miss smoking. I know quitting is good for me or whatever, but I do enjoy a good smoke. Too bad I can't stop at just one.

There is no reason whatsoever to miss smoking.

There is literally not one single good thing about it to miss. If you think there is, you're just fooling yourself, because there isn't.

I'm no smoker, but it does feel good from time to time to take a drag on a cigarette.

Speak for yourself. Smoking around a fire with a beer is pretty much the greatest thing in the world in my opinion.

If smoking had no redeeming qualities it wouldn't be so hard to quit. It's not just the nicotine that hooks people.

In any case, I quit again, yippee. Last time I quit for four years, maybe I can repeat that.

If I had no kids and no wife I would likely still smoke. I used to enjoy it quite a lot when drinking, golfing, sitting on a beach with a cold beer.

I am glad I am no longer smoking now though. It's pretty hard to argue that it doesn't have any negative health effects.

You're right, it's not just the nicotine, it's also the way people trick themselves into thinking that smoking is this great thing they need, or in the case of an ex smoker, this great thing they miss.

That mentality is why I tried to quit and failed dozens of times. It's also why I started again after quitting for thirteen months several years back. Whenever I saw someone smoking I let myself think I missed it. That I was missing out. If you allow yourself to think that way eventually you will go back to smoking.

It's just not true though. It's an awful habit with no redeeming qualities.

I just passed the nine month mark and I still have the occasional dream about having a cigarette. I get mad at myself and am completely gutted that I caved. When I wake i'm so effing relieved that it was only a dream. Throughout this whole process I have shared every single moment, thought, dream, and craving with my teenaged son in hopes that it will terrify him out of ever even thinking about lighting up.
