If you look at the Oilers history they have been pretty bold when it comes to signing their young star players. It started with the 7x6 deals for Hall and RNH which were actually trend setting and they did it again with Draisaitl and McDavid. I am positive the Oilers will attempt to make some sort of historic deal to Draisaitl and McDavid to keep them and it's a matter of if they want to play their careers there, how bad do they want to win given how difficult it will be to surround them with talent. I have to imagine dealing with all the creepy Oilers fans has likely got old for McDavid especially as the guy can't even go to the liquor store without being harassed. It's probably not lost on them how good of a time Tkachuk is having in Florida right now as players talk. NHL players are inherently risk averse when it comes to contract negotiations as players like Matthews and Tkachuk are the exception to the norm so it wouldn't shock me if they took the money but at the same time I have to think both are ready to turn the page on Edmonton. It's definitely going to be an intriguing storyline.

If the Oilers lose Draisaitl and McDavid, they're probably gonna outtank us

Just placed on Waivers. I'd put in a claim for him.

It still seems pretty dumb for the Oilers management and the player/agent to bring it up now. It kind of forces the management to come up with big a number because the last thing they would want to do now is have the agent go back to the player with a disappointing offer and negatively impact them mentally while the Stanley Cup is on the line. If I was a GM and an agent tried to do that, it would sound like extortion and not starting negotiations in good faith. It would be like an employee going to their boss just before submitting a major deliverable, and saying you would like to discuss getting a raise. The GM in this case would be way better off not playing that game until after the playoffs.

As Pike pointed out, Goodrow does exactly what Greer does at 3 times the price. I'd pass. Keep Greer.

Juice him up with Backs and Coleman, flip him for an asset at the deadline.

Gross. I’d only want him if the Flames could get an asset to do so from the Rangers.

Technically they can’t even negotiate until July 1st and starting a negotiation in the middle of the Finals is a bit dumb but who knows. It’s Ken Holland and the Oilers.

They can negotiate now but they can't sign a contract until July 1. Even then, the contract doesn't get filed until July 1. Wasn't it the Oilers and Nurse who signed his next deal in the winter/spring when but couldn't file the contract until July 1?

The Goodrow thing is weird. He's overpaid, but it's not like his cap is 5 million. He had 4 goals in 80 games, then followed it up with 6 in the playoffs. The Rangers don't really have anyone looking at a big raise this summer, except maybe Lindgren. Are they going big-game hunting?

Seems like something is up with NYR. The Kakko deal also seemed to be signed with the intent to move him.

NO WAIVER CLAIMS
The Flames have 20 mil in cap space. There should be a billboard outside of all cap strapped stadiums with "We'll fix your cap for a 1st"

I think they are giving themselves another year to decide if he is worth a long term commitment

Yea, I meant sign as UFA after he's bought out. not put in a claim at current salary. that would be stupid, but if Flames could get Goodrow at around $1MM and flip him at deadline that is good asset management.

Yes, they should be targetting deals like they did with Montreal to give Monahan.

The Flames' 20 million in cap space will be used to slightly overpay middle of the road players so the flames can achieve mediocrity. Then supporters will say that Edwards is a great owner because he spends to the cap.

I have no idea if that's what the Flames are going to do, but Conroy has already made several moves for the future. But seriously, if people think the Flames are doomed to mediocrity, I don't understand why they would put time and energy into them.

Picking up Goodrow won't change much in the standings, but there is a bit of a log jam of players that can make this team. IMO players in should have players out too. If we sign Debrusk, claim Goodrow and keep everyone else, we are probably demoting someone that most of us won't want too.
Defense is similar if we keep Kylington.
Every prospect and player we have all appear to be 2nd/3rd line players. I doubt we are in the middle of the standings, but we can't risk missing out on a top 3 pick over the next 2 years. We need at least 1 but probably 2 picks and right now this team is still likely to be at the bottom but if we miss out we can look back at these moves and think was it worth claiming Goodrow and putting him with Coleman and Backlund and trading him for a 2nd after he gains his value back vs just drafting a franchise player top 3? We have enough 2nd rounders and 2nd round caliber players.
This team needs their McDavid, Barkov, Mackinnon and Matthews type player to go with all our nice-looking prospects.
