Aside from anything else, which has been rehashed over and over, the fact that he spent assets on Zadorov and Pitlick and then paid Zadorov is an indication of limited intellectual capacity.

This is my biggest annoyance.

Every year we overpay in $$ and assets for fringe players and 7th D - In the offseason and trade deadline

Every year these fringe players add the same results.

I know 3rd and 4th round picks are longshots to make it, but when you give up enough of them you really start hampering the teams ability to product 5/6 D and 3/4th line forwards.

So irritating

Well said and I think that factor increases significantly when they still get regular minutes night in and night out. It is pretty obvious that some of our guys in stockton help this team get better today and in the future. It is a young man's game now Daryl and Brad. Give the young guys the leeway that so many of our plugs have had and compare the difference. Many of us will be pleasantly surprised.

I would assume that these were the guys that Sutter wanted.

Considering it was Sutter who called and recruited Lewis & Richardson it wouldn't shock me if he hand picked all the free agents and Treliving carried it out.

I have said it many times before. The closer Gaudreau gets to free agency his chances of returning decrease significantly.

I am a born and raised Calgarian, I loved Canada and with our current landscape of this country I have thought about asking my company to transfer me to our Houston office. If I was a millionaire I would love the idea of playing in the States where life is returning back to "normal" to say the least. Sorry I said it, and I am ready for the counter responses to start pouring in.

No one factors that into the equation and i will probably get ripped for arguing this point. Canada sucks right now and if I was an American with the option to return to my native country, I would be all over that idea RIGHT NOW. Plus having NHL type facilities where I go to work every day is appealing. The Flames set-up at the Dome is sub junior standards.

And once in a while those 3rd and 4th round picks pan out.

Adam Fox and Johnny were 4th round picks. As was TJ Brodie.

It's been a repeatable pattern over his tenure with the amount of money and assets wasted on depth players while never being able to put together a proper 2nd line. Rinse and repeat. I hate to keep harping on the Coleman contract because he's a useful player right now but he's on the back side of his prime and isn't a top 6 player. The 6 x $5 million for a bottom 6 player would have been better used on a player that is legit top 6 and not in his 30's but that's a player Treliving has never been able to identify and acquire over his tenure so really it's a matter of the GM that simply hasn't got the job done.

It’s an indication of desperation and a weak prospect pipeline. A weak pipeline caused by dealing away a bunch of 1st and 2nd round picks earlier in his tenure. Trades that were also made out of impatience and a weak prospect pipeline.

So starting to see a theme, but a theme that predates Treliving. It isn’t surprising a franchise that has been in impatient Win Now mode for 16 of the last 20 years is mired in mediocrity.

Yeah, anyone who doesn’t see Sutter’s fingerprints all over the off-season deals is kidding themselves.

Even if that is true, what is the reason for Treliving being around?

It depends. Americans are 50/50. Not everyone values freedom the same.

True, but Treliving is the GM and it's his job to build the team. Of course there's input from Sutter - but let's look at players that you could "blame" Sutter for perhaps influencing Treliving on:

Richardson - 13th forward
Lewis - 12th forward
Zadarov - 6th defenceman
Gudbranson - 5th defenceman

It's not like Sutter was out there influencing massively important roster spots. Treliving also has a long history of bringing in absolute rubbish to fill out the bottom of his rosters, so it's not like Sutter's "influence" was preventing him from doing his job any better than he usually does it...

Considering powerhouse chicago and Seattle don’t want anything to do with him. That’s even more puzzling. Who does the Flames pro scouting. Most fans already knew he was garbage.

I'd be willing to see Treliving go just not see this bumped ever again.

Getting so tiring.

Team is 6th in the West in points % which is a lot higher than most on this site had them. I get that they're struggling coming out of the Covid break, but yeah lets fire the GM!

Hated last night's game. I think they need to bolster the third line. But a mid season GM firing isn't going to happen so why walk it out? Seems more like a temper tantrum in a Walmart parking lot.

Don't click on it. Problem solved.

...but we've been tantruming for so long, and this is clearly a Toys R Us parking lot.

Here are some ideas from the Googlebox that may help deal with tantruming children Flames fans:

Give plenty of positive attention. ...
Try to give toddlers Flames fans some control over little things. ...
Keep off-limits objects out of sight and out of reach. ...(blackout Vegas Golden Knights games in Calgary?)
Distract your child Flames fan. ...
Help kids Flames fans learn new skills and succeed. ...
Consider the request carefully when your child Flames fan wants something.

Guessing this wasn't done in the spirit of actually helping given our history, but not a bad idea nonetheless.

I don't love Lewis, Richardson, or Gudbranson but really those do feel like Sutter asks directly, and in the end they are 1 year deals for UFAs that didn't cost a whole lot.

It sucks to see the Flames keep going to bargain bin to fill out the fourth line / bottom pair but in reality that's all the NHL, all teams tend to sign 2-3 guys like that each year. Flames problem is their weird forward usage has those guys playing more minutes than they should this year.

The two offseason deals you can really question are Pitlick and Zadorov.

Pitlick has been useless and he came at the cost of a 4th round pick and $1.75M. It's not a huge cost but it adds up.

The other one is Zadorov. He's not as bad as this site or twitter would have you believe, but at the cost of a 3rd and a cap hit of $3.75M he's just not a substantial improvement on what Valimaki, Stone, or Mackey could have brought on that third pair.

That 3rd round pick, 4th round pick, and $5.5M combined for those two players would go a long way right now to being able to have another top 9 forward that these team desperately needs.

Maybe the Flames could have added a Tomas Tatar (2 x $4.5M), Mikael Granlund (4 x $5M), Alex Wennberg (3 x $4.5M) to the top 9 forwards with that money.

Or maybe trading for Eichel becomes easier if you don't need Buffalo or a 3rd party to take about $7M in salary back and they only need to take $3-4M back instead (aka what Vegas was able to do because they had all that LTIR space open up).

Treliving has had a bad habit of needing to spend right to the cap on day 1 of free agency every year and that’s his biggest issue IMO. Keeping $3-4M of cap room to make a training camp or in-season move, or take advantage of a team with cap issues later in the offseason has value.
