Which might be the dumbest tradition in golf? Like a guy gets a hole in one and buys drinks for everyone? So weird.

Don’t get me wrong…if I get one someday, I’ll pull out my wallet! I just think it’s weird.

I will gladly drop $500 on drinks if I get a hole in one.

I wouldn’t id but my playing partners a beverage and that’s it. Had a hole in 1 at d’arcy and only bought my 4 some drinks. Buying a clubhouse full comes from when drinks were $0.20

People should be buying you a drink and not the other way around. Plus there's hole in one insurance that my course refuses to get.

I would absolutely not do that if I got a hole in one. Maybe its because a lot of golfers are high earners statistically to the point that hundreds of dollars to strangers is fun for an attention moment/tradition, but no I'm putting myself out hundreds of dollars to strangers when that amount will have a significant effect on me because of a tradition.

Like MacDaddy, I'd buy for my group as we're the ones experiencing and celebrating the moment. Makes way more sense.

It does depend on your situation and where you are. If I was at my club, I’m definitely opening a tab and paying. But at the same time if someone at the club got a hole in one and I didn’t know them, I wouldn’t have a beer on their tab.

If I was playing somewhere else though, I’d think twice before I just bought drinks for a bunch of random strangers.

Well, almost 3 years to the day, I golfed Water Valley after vowing never to golf there again.

Now under new ownership, I put my grievances aside and headed out to play what was my favorite course in the area.

My friend and I went into the pro shop to check in and the difference couldn't have been more compelling. Pro shop was renovated and bright. We were warmly greeted, and the two behind the counter seemed to take real interest in making us feel welcome. They told us how great the couple (local member and his wife) was who we were paired with and warned us to spend time on the practice green as the greens were very fast. Previously, the only banter we got from staff was a warning that if we drove our carts into the thicker rough they would be kicking us out.

On the course, we noticed a new back tee box on 10 and 7. The small snack shack was removed on 6. The par 3 on 16 was opened up on the right side, and the green was also in terrific shape - I remember they used to have drainage issues before.

Regarding the round itself, it was a tale of two 9s. Shot 41/47. Front nine could have been really magical as it included 2 double bogeys but with an eagle in between, my first in probably 10 years. Eagle was on 7, where I was able to cut the corner, leaving me 120 to the pin. Back nine a triple and double bogey derailed me.

Then to top it all off, my friend wanted to buy a shirt he saw in the pro shop. Our round started at 4:20pm, so it was almost 8:30 when we finished and the pro shop was closed. As we were walking away, a staff member happened by and asked if we needed help. Hearing about the shirt, she ran inside, unlocked the pro shop, re-opened the till, and waited around while my friend tried on the shirt then bought it. As we were leaving, my friend asked me "So, you think that would have happened under the old owners?". Not a chance.

The course is in great shape, and the weather was perfect. Even the bugs stayed away until about 16. Easily my best golf experience this year.

Nice humble brag Dion!

It's a major victory for me just to hit the green on a par 3, my chances of ever having to buy a round are pretty remote.

New clubs are on the way!

Now they're nothing fancy but I'm going to give the Stix a try.
https://stix.golf/en-ca/products/sti...e-complete-set
All in with shipping I think I'm 1800$ CAD for the 14 piece full set and a bag.

In my current bag I only have one club that's less than a decade old (Sim 2 Max driver). Everything else is a set from 2008. I'm also about a 25 handicap so I'm not even sure I'll be able to tell the difference haha.

I'm excited to give these a shot!

They're here!

Delacour tomorrow... It's been nice knowing you fellas. From all accounts the bugs are horrific, don't know if I will survive the round.

One of the few times I hope it's windy AF out there.

A guy at my work sprayed himself with WD-40 to get rid of the mosquitoes, he said it worked. I still called him an idiot. Please try it out and report back so I can call him an idiot again.

They are bad out there for sure but if it's windy and hot it keeps them down a bit. Greens were super fast when I played earlier this week.

Have a little trip out to Invermere Friday/Saturday.

Copper point radium springs Friday. Greywolf Saturday. Looking forward to it. Haven’t played copper point so looking forward to that.

Was very windy so little to no mosquitoes.

Course was in good shape. Didn't hit into any bunkers, so can't comment on those.

Greens were very, very slow. Really wish they'd bake that place out so we could get some Open Championship feels.

I don't have this problem at all with reviews. Send me to any course in the world and I can write a book about their bunkers.

I forgot to mention the sand at Kananaskis to whoever was asking before. It’s brutal. The sand seemed extra fine and it made it really difficult to play out of. It was a really harsh penalty to end up in a trap.

I got 2 rounds in with the new clubs and wow! I was absolutely crushing the ball with these compared to my last set (taylor made burner irons + hand me down Callaway wedges and woods)

I am far from a pro, my handicap would probably be around 28 and my best round is a 94.

Driver - seemed okay on a few hits but I have a Sim Max 2 Draw that works for me so I won't use the Stix one and will sell it with my old set

Woods - only took a few shots with the woods but I noticed they were forgiving on a couple toe shots hitting off slope. I'm loving the 4 hybrid since I've never had one before.

Irons - Amazing. It's probably that my old irons were worn out but I gained 20-30 yards on every iron which is obviously huge. Being able to hit an iron off the tee box and actually get some distance was such a great feeling!! The irons feel very light and very quick with the graphite shaft. A couple of my buddies tried them out and they're very much a grab and go clubs - everyone hit them great and enjoyed the feel. Definitely the highlight of the set.

Wedges - I had a hard time with the wedges because of the added distance. My old set had an AW and SW. Now I have a 52/56/60 and ended up overshooting a lot of greens. They feel great and seem to have a lot of spin, the shots I did land on the green did a great job of stopping where they landed. Need to hit the driving range and dial in these distances but am very satisfied with them so far!

Putter - A personal preference but I did switch to the Stix putter and it's very serviceable. I've never had a fat grip putter but it's working pretty well for me. It's nothing fancy which I would imagine is exactly what you want in a box set.

Black finish - I think these clubs look fantastic dressed in black. That being said I'm not sure the black finish is going to last more than a couple of seasons. Just from playing two rounds I already have some minor scratches and scrapes on a few clubs. I figured going in this would be the case so I'm okay with the scuffs and scratches.

Final thoughts - I would say these clubs perform exactly as advertised. A great set for beginners who are actively trying to improve their game. One of the biggest things I've gained from this set is confidence. To have a full 14pc that hits well is a real game changer. Last week if I was anywhere 160+ out from the green I wouldn't have anything I could reliably hit and would have to either lay up, or hope to get a lucky shot with one of my woods. Now I've got at least a chance (depending on me of course) to land a ball up to 200 yards before I have to depend on the woods.

I would recommend these to anyone who's looking for an improvement set with great performance for the price. Total came to 1900$ for the set, bag and shipping. My plan is to clean up my game and hopefully get to a point where I can make use of some higher end, fitted clubs before I drop that much money.

Let's break 90!

Ice cube them to keep your black faces in tip top shape. After every round, take an ice cube to them and run it across the face and into the groves. Ice is a natural soft abrasive and will get right into the groves to remove any debris. Ice naturally lubricates as it cleans and if you take a microfiber cloth to them immediately after cleaning, they will dry without streaking. The best way to keep any club with groves in great shape.
