Sounds like posturing to increase value for a deal.

Galchenyuk is an unreal talent. The Habs have really messed up his development. Backlund would certainly be a Claude Julien kind of player. Would hate to see him go.
But while they are grabbing Chucky, they may as well take Sergachev also

On it's own it would be a pretty stupid move to protect Brouwer over Ferland. If Treliving is half as good a GM as we think he is I simply don't see how he could leave Ferland unprotected unless there was something in it for the Flames from LV and if that's the case I would be fine with it as IMO he's not a core player. The Flames really need a goaltender so fans have to accept a roster player, prospect and/or draft pick may have to be sent out to bring in a goaltender that the team covets.

I don't see the Flames trading Backlund or not signing him to FA contracts until he is into his mid 30's. He bleeds red and is an awesome player....defensive stud. He isn't going anywhere and any trade dreams with him involved are a waste of internet bytes IMO.

If you use the expansion tools, reaching the cap floor is not an issue. Teams are pushing hard to for Vegas to take bad contracts off their hands. I think the only way Brouwer gets chosen is if we offer Vegas more than what other teams are offering to take on their bad contracts.

Yeah, unless something crazy happens I think the Flames center core for the foreseeable future is Monahan (22), Backlund (28), Bennett (21), Lazar (22) and Jankowski (22).
Flames fans should probably just get used to it, and be happy about it, because although there doesn't seem to be any "point per game super star centers" there, it's still a pretty darn good and young group to build with.

I agree to some extent...I mean I have been very adamant on here that if Ferland is on the top line this season the flames should just throw in the towel. However I just expect the worst lately
Ferland gone over Brouwer....Elliott or Mason in goal.
It does seem odd that we are so worried to lose players who didn't even come close to getting it done. I think Backlund is a good player too but where was he down the stretch and in the playoffs? He is certainly not untouchable.

Backlund was also the unquestioned MVP of the Flames last season. Not posturing.

Unless the Flames want to trade Backlund or Bennett I do not think so.
I could see the Rangers loving to get a guy like Bennett or Galchenyuk for Stepan. They had success with the Brassard for Zibenijad trade last year and got a player with similar production who was 5 years younger and half the cap hit

Uh, I don't think this is true.
He talked like he would be better on the ice next season, but I heard no guarantee that he'd be back for sure.

Can you explain to me why you think Galchenyuk is a worse player than Backlund?
Galchenyuk is a 23 year old, 55-60 point player already and scored 30 goals last season. He is a big body, so it's not size that you are talking about.
Are you going to say Backlund is better defensively? That is true but Backlund is also currently 5 years older and at 23, was definitely not as good defensively as he is now.
Fair enough, that you like Backlund more or think he is a better fit... but the whole "YUCK" thing is weird. It's not like people are suggesting Backlund for Byron.. Galchenyuk is a former 3rd overall player who has improved every single year that he has been in the league.

If Tre said that, then he probably already asked GMGM if they will take Brouwer if he is exposed, and the answer was "no".
Flames have no issue with the expansion draft. I think Vegas might actually take Stajan. There's a lack of good centres in the expansion draft and they will also be able to flip him at the deadline for maybe a 3rd or 4th round pick.
Asset wise, Stajan might be the best selection for VGK.

Would be great if we could pull Halak out of NYI in exchange for Brouwer. Would kill 2 birds with 1 stone (for both teams).

For me it's trading a center for a winger. I like Galchenyuk but we rely way too much on Backlund up the middle to make that deal.

Hearing a lot of rumblings that a Drouin/Galchenyuk swap is coming...I'm no tradebreaker, so take it for what it's worth.
Conor McKenna @mckennaconor
again, nothing definitive, but sounds like the Habs would be packaging a first with Galchenyuk in the deal.
