Scoring Winger

We've started to do our 2014 Draft Countdown on FC and figured this would be a pretty appropriate place to put it as we run down our first round:
This will feature blurbs on Cornel, DeAngelo, McKeown, Kempe and Kapanen:

Y'all might enjoy this as well. We've put together a sortable table that can be divided by round, sorted by team and the draft progresses, we'll fill out the players picked. Feel free to play around with it. We'll take any feedback:

I would rather get hit by a train than watch an MLB game, so this would be a pretty easy decision for me.

Just curious if I missed something regarding Buffalo being interested in Bennett?
Obviously fans don't pick their players, but most Buffalo fans seem set on Reinhart... I haven't heard anything regarding Bennett?

That would be nice, but Buffalo might have something to say about that.

Their management is pretty high on both of them. I think they're taking Bennett personally, obviously no guarantees.

Yeah, I don't know about Reinhart falling to us now - I think the Sabres are leaning Reinhart and that seems to be the general feeling among Sabres fans.
I actually think Bennett at 4 is the likely scenario now.

Have somebody at the Flames season ticket event again.
Once again Treliving was asked to rank his top 5:
Ekblad, Reinhart, Draisaitl, Bennett, Ritchie.
Named them in that order, but followed it up with in no particular order.
Also said that won't pick for what we need in October (not picking for need) will pick for best asset. However since the players in the top are so close position could end up being a tiebreaker all other things being equal.
Also stated that it makes no sense to move up right now.
I have a feeling we try to pick up another pick in the top 8 and really aim for Ritchie. Leaving the draft with Bennett and Ritchie would be huge. Those two along with Monahan and Giordano would really set up our identity of the future.

Well there it is, Ritchie in the top five but he is a LW so he may not be a priority.

I also can't see Ritchie dropping to 8. 6-7 maybe but if we do acquire another top 10 overall I think we'll use it on Virtanen once Nick gets picked up.

I think priority could be more complicated than just position. Flames need big skilled wingers with some jam. Ritchie can definitely fill a 'need' category there.
I still do think the Flames draft one of the other 4, however.

Random hypothetical Panthers perspective question:
Would you rather have Barkov and Ekblad...
or Seth Jones and your choice of the Sams?

Barkov tops out to be better than both Sams I figure. Jones has better potential than Ekblad, but who knows with young D. If Ekblad hits as a #2 d-man, they're ahead.

I'm actually glad he has Draisaitl as his 3rd preference
Cause if the Sams and Ekblad go in the top 3, I'd want us to take Draisaitl over anyone else.

Yep but in other ways he fills our biggest need which is size and physicality up front.
With Monahan, Backlund, Granlund, Jankowski, Reinhart, Knight, etc we're actually quite deep at centre so you can say that C isn't really the biggest priority either. All the top players in the draft except Ekblad are at positions we're quite deep in (C and LW).
We really don't have any powerforwards of any ilk except Ferland. I think the impact of powerforwards gets underrated by many a fan. They win important board battles and net battles which generates offense. They can't be shut down easily and can power through many a defenseman. They open up space for their teammates and wear down the opposition defensemen through their physicality.
Therefore IMO Ritchie actually fills one of the biggest needs we have in our organization. Ritchie and Ekblad are the two most unique commodities from the Flames perspective IMO.
I still favour Bennett over Ritchie for sure and I'm not sure we could pass on Reinhart for Ritchie. Draisaitl vs Ritchie might be closer than some think from a Flames perspective since Draisaitl is very similar to Monahan. If the Flames think Backlund can be a #2 centre then we are actually in great shape at centre with Monahan/Backlund as your 1-2 punch with Granlund and Jankowski as backup options and guys like Reinhart and Knight potential checking line centre options for the future.
True powerforwards with enough skill to play on a scoring line might be one of the two rarest commodities in the NHL right now along with true #1 defensemen. IMO there's more 1st line centres in the NHL than there are top line powerforwards.
