Not a #1 center but is a pretty good second line center if you can slot him there.
Of course it's dependent on cost - Galchenyuk+1st would be a crazy overpayment. Like McDonaugh + Higgins for Gomez all over again.

Is he terrible defensively or something? Cause that dollar value seems similar to what Backlund would get. Backlund is older has less points and a less proven track record for scoring. Steppan might not be a bargain but I don't think he's overpaid for a point producing centre

If you traded Backlund to the Rangers for Stepan plus something substantial that could be alright for the Flames.
Backlund will probably be looking for that type of payday if he has another 50- point season, and there is a chance that he doesn't replicate last season's numbers anyway.
Stepan is younger. If the Rangers add was good enough, it might be worth it.

Bob McKenzie @TSNBobMcKenzie
On Alex Galchenyuk future in MTL, my take as follows: MTL is most certainly "listening" on trade talk (where have we heard that before, PK).
Bob McKenzie @TSNBobMcKenzie
By no means is it assured Galchenyuk will be traded, but MTL needs help at centre and it's become clear MTL doesn't view AG as a centre.
Bob McKenzie @TSNBobMcKenzie
Obviously, fit would have to be just right and by no means are Habs trying to get rid of Galchenyuk. Needs a new deal whether he stays/goes.
Bob McKenzie @TSNBobMcKenzie
Common sense would suggest Galchenyuk won't sign an extension in MTL until he has a clearer picture of whether he's staying or going.
Bob McKenzie @TSNBobMcKenzie
If trade appears likely, guessing preference would be to negotiate with new team as opposed to doing a deal in MTL and then getting dealt.

Raanta + Stepan For Backlund (+)
?
Not sure that helps the flames. Also, Stepan is American so that probably limits his desire to play in Canada.

Galchenyuk for Stepan seems reasonable for both teams.

Backlund is the heartbeat of this team. It would be foolish to move him. The Flames should sign him and give him a co-C.

So we pay Stephan 6.5M because we are scared that Backlund will want 5.5M?

I think if Backlund hits 50+ points again he will want $6 millions minimum.
But it wouldn't be a case of trading scared. It would be a case of helping the Rangers get out of cap trouble in order to swap centers and get something else out of it as well.
Like Flash Walken mentioned Raanta which could potentially solve the Flames goaltending problem.

Stepan is a RHS. I think he'd be the perfect Hudler replacement type linemate for Mony and Johnny. Stepan is one of those deceptively strong players too, great at using that reverse check along the halfwall, and he's pretty good on the cycle. I bet he reaches at least 65 points with Johnny. Thing is, idk if we could realistically afford him. Maybe a package centered around the 16th pick????.....................??

Still don't get the reasoning as to why Vegas wouldn't want Brouwer. They need to reach the cap floor and there's way better options than Kulak/Wotherspoon elsewhere. Brouwer will be one of the better forwards exposed, frankly.

Would love Galchenyuk on the Flames but he's probably going to cost too much to acquire

I think I'd cry if we traded Backlund. Galchenyuk, Neal nor Stepan could replace what he brings to this team tangibly or intangibly.

I really like Backlund and he is one of my favourite players. However, I think a line of Tkachuk-Bennett-Galchenyuk in the future could be dominant once all of those players develop.

Sign Verteeg or stone, or draft Chiasson. There's better options to reach the cap floor than Brouwer

Seems like a waste to make all those moves only to have Mason as your goalie.

That is what I struggled with.. if we can pick up a bonafide starter that is relatively cheap < 6 mil... I would be all up for that too

maybe its the fact that nothing seems to go right for the Flames lately but I am seriously worried about their protection list
I fully expect them to lose Ferland in another PR nightmare

So is there a chance for a deal to be made with NYR involving Stepan & Raanta?

Treliving called Backlund the team MVP last night. I don't see the tea trading him unless it is a massive overpayment
