Straw as a 4th outfielder that can be used for defensive substitutions and pinch running scenarios isn't a terrible bet IMO.

Especially with Varsho injured to start the year and the OF depth being Springer, Loperfido, Lukes, and Clase.

If he's the piece you needed to take for the international signing pool money then that's not a bad decision.

Straw is really not good.

If they don't land Sasaki IMO they look pretty dumb taking on Straws salary at a time when they already look pretty dumb to begin with.

I don't understand why Straw's money counts for CBT if he's not on the 40 man roster - I thought that was how they counted it?

Although it's a back-loaded contract so his AAV is only $5MM even though his salary is more than that.

I guess it depends on what they're CBT budget is. Nobody seems to know for sure, but if it's limited you certainly don't want to eat into by committing millions to a guy with a 74 wRC+ in AAA last year.

Sure, however no matter where Straw plays (MLB or AAA), his salary counts against the luxury tax.

This whole Sasaki thing really feels like a pivitol moment for the franchise. Whichever way it goes, its going to lead to drastic reactions.
