Why would he only be looking at four years? That takes him to 34 years old and would be a bit of a gamble that he can maintain his level of play into his mid-30's.

I should also acknowledge he says it’s unlikely. His piece is on potential disrupters in the draft.

Yeah I don't get that at all. It should be the other way around with the oilers looking for 4 years and Draisaitl looking for 8 years
Doesn't make a lick of sense to me.

Maybe he's like "If yo want me to stay here you're going to have to pay up, but I can't stand it for another 8 years so 4 is all you get."

Maybe he knows McDavid is leaving? And at least locked in one more year with him? I too am trying to make sense with it and even my attempt was poor.

Honestly if I was the Oilers I would jump at $15.5x4 as that blows away $13.5x8 when you consider the long term salary cap implications.

Maybe he’s thinking of hanging it up at 34. He certainly won’t need the money

I think this rumour is garbage. No way he’s negotiating during the finals and the terms make zero sense.

The Edmonton media and others are saying he wants a long term deal.
Technically they can’t even negotiate until July 1st and starting a negotiation in the middle of the Finals is a bit dumb but who knows. It’s Ken Holland and the Oilers.

If it secures the Flames Tij I wouldn’t have a problem with it

Yeah, I mean if you're a guy who is really high on Tij and are pretty sure someone else will take him between 5-8 OA then for sure you'd be OK with it.

He isn't. He's looking for a long term deal according to reputable insiders.

Flames take Tij.
|
Take Tij out of it for a moment and just input whichever pick you want.
Is the trade worth it to get your guy?
Would be peak Flames to have to do this after winning those useless games down the stretch and not already being at 5th/6th pick.

Not too sure what your expectations were. The Flsmes were .350 after the trade deadline. Should they have just forfeited their remaining games?

Yeah, it wasn’t the useless games down the stretch it was holding on to Markstrom when Jersey wanted him since November.

What are the odds of drafting an impact player at 28 vs 57? If you want a certain player and he is not going to drop to 9, you do this deal. Flames draft better in the 2nd anyways.

This draft isn’t worth going from 9 to 5. Let the top 8 before you pick and pick the player you like the most available. The one that will make the most difference for this franchise. If that happens to be Iggy then so be it.

If it were to eat a salary I’d be open to it (someone like Gallagher), but not parting with picks.

I actually think he will want 4 years or less at around $15M per year. I think 3 years would make more sense than 4 years though.
He would have a couple more total years in Edmonton to extend their window, it would allow him to overlap with McDavid's prime for the most part, and he would still only be 32 or 33 at the expiry of that deal and would be able to take an 7 year deal to take him to 39/40 years old for his retirement contract.
If you are those two maybe you'd think about doing 3 years (Draisaitl) and 2 years (McDavid), which gives you 4 more years together to try to win a cup.
Then you both become UFAs at 32 and 31 years old respectively and could easily still cash in on a 7 or 8 year deal.
You'd also be looking at a $100M+ salary cap at that point and I think some team would still give them him $16M+ for 7 years at 32/31 years old when the cap is that high and a max contract is $20M.

This screams like MTL trying to fear monger the Flames.
This would be a stupid trade.
