Years back in University I was repairing my car and I needed something to drive for a few days, I drove a manual Ford Probe and Pontiac Sunfire.
Two of arguably the worst cars ever to put rubber to road.
But they were manuals, so going from my automatic daily to those for a little bit was a blast!
Hell...during 'The Great Calamity of ought 13' I drove a VW Westfalia as a daily driver for nearly a month, that thing had the weight of a tank and the horsepower of a terminally ill mule but with a stick it was still fun to tool around town in!

Ha - I used to own a Westfalia that was a stick shift. It had no power, but was a blast to drive.

I drove a Hino and that thing was not fun no matter what the transmission. What a miserable beast.

Oh they were brutal right? Merging onto the highway you had to stay on the shoulder as you rowed through the gears just trying to get up to something resembling the speed of traffic!
And the huge floor shifter was so cool! That and the fact that it had a Bus steering wheel, it made you feel like you were driving something so much bigger!

You should look into buying an alum block. Essentially it is a brick that you wipe your neck with after shaving. It will sting for a minute on the areas that are sensitive but it is super helpful in alleviating any razor burn or cuts.
They are cheap and last forever:

Says a person that never had to drive something like a Dodge Daytona Turbo Z (I'm dating myself here) that had a manual transmission that was like moving a stick through a crammed bucket of bolts or a Mustang with a bad MT82 transmission. I would rather have a good automatic transmission than a bad manual transmission anytime as nothing ruins a sporty car more than a manual transmission that's not reliable shifting through gears.

I mean, walking to work in brand new dress shoes one size too small is better than driving a Chrysler product from the 80s.

My wife had an '89 Probe 5-speed when we were in university and I always thought it was a fun car. Peppy enough, great mileage, nicely appointed. Bit of a chick car, but hey, she was/is a chick.

When you are a student you take what you can get. I think the manual transmission in those cars was a Getrag.

Oh man my friend had one of those(same year, too, I think) and had it painted with flames. You needed hearing protection to drive it to Banff.

At last, a literal gear grinder.
My current mid-life crisis ride is a rusty 2000 Jeep TJ, 4 cylinders that made 120 hp new and I'm guessing a decent amount less now. No amount of rowing gears makes it less terrifying to merge at high speed.

It is kinda funny that both of the transmissions you're complaining about are Getrag boxes.

I've shared this before, but my first car was a 95 Corolla (not to brag), with a 3 speed auto.
I would manually shift it, and especially at stop lights flip it into neutral, so I could resemble a manual transmissioned car. Self deprecating, poserish, and shameful, but should ultimately paint a picture into how much I desired a manual.
