It isn't a great trade, and probably not even a good one. It might be just OK if it pans out in the Flames' favor.
But the downside of it is also very minor. Like this is not a trade that's going to make or break what the Flames are trying to accomplish with their retool. In fact, it's probably going to be inconsequential altogether.
If you're making a fuss about it, you're were probably more in love with the player than was rational.

Need to judge this trade based on the larger picture of what the team looks like post deadline. It's a gross return for now but if you turn the newfound cap space into another pick or prospect down the line because you have wiggle room to take on something undesirable at ther deadline then the trade suddenly looks alot better. I'm not sold on Conroy but I don't think this trade can be judged on its own. Gotta wait and see what else shakes out.

Some definitely should.
But no, it’s best to wait and see what else they do.

Trying to will a Zadorov trade to be the type that "moves the needle" is unrealistic considering he didn't do anything during his Flames stint to prove he should be paid and given more than the minutes of a solid 4-5 guy... and we traded a 3rd for him in the first place
So essentially we at least got SOME return out of that investment even if it was just one extra 5th round pick

Has Zadorov ever elaborated what it was about the team that made him request a trade?

The Flames didn’t want to extend him on a long term contract

They’ll be able to trade for picks, prospects, and roster players on their first contracts. But the great majority of veterans on most teams these days (the players with significant cap hits) have NTCs.
Cap space has value. But I’m struggling to think of an example where a team selling at the deadline leveraged that value.

Pretty clear why. Flames didn't make him a priority to re-sign. He was not on pace to match or exceed the number of goals he scored in 22/23 and felt he deserved more ice time than the other d-men so he would be in a better position to sign a contract in the summer.

16 shots against tonight.
Flames sorely missing Zadorov in that game..
Probably their cleanest game defensively all year.

If you have the examples to support this theory, I'll bite.
I don't think you do though.

Yep.
And I bet some team will be willing to (over)pay him in the Summer…just glad it won’t be the Flames.
Loved his time here (warts and all), but not a contract this team can award.
(Conroy’s intermission interview talking about not having to retain any salary in this deal said a lot too…)
