Tkachuk wanted to live on the beach like his buddy Bennett. Can't offer that in Calgary. It's a bummer but what can ya do?

Does that mean if the Flames made it Markstrom would be putting up a 0.935? At least until we played the Oilers...

Really though it's just another example of a goaltender getting hot at the right time which is something we have seen at various times in the history of the NHL playoffs. It takes a lot of hopes and prayers to expect that a struggling goaltender is going to do a complete 180 for the playoffs.

I'm not pleased he left - he was and is a star.
But I don't blame him. I would have done EXACTLY the same thing. I'm not sure I can think of anything better than playing hockey for a living and being a young millionaire in south Florida. I would tell my agent to try anything to get me into a LA, Anaheim, Tampa or Florida.

He couldn't have necessarily known he'd be going to Florida specifically at the time. He bet on himself though and accepted the bridge deal that was offered. The Flames gave him that temptation to go to free agency early and after his 104 point season, he knew that he held all the cards. I can't really blame him either. The team didn't seem to believe in him a few years ago when the option to sign him long term was there, neither did a lot of the fanbase it seems. Hard to blame him for taking the route he did, but the Flames badly mishandled him.

Had to take a ####
Only coach brave enough to say it out loud is Darryl and he got fired
Just kidding. Who knows, maybe he envisioned the whole team following him quickly and leaving the Hurricanes and their fans stunned?

Loyalty.. a foreign concept with these new kids
Now college loopholes are a standard rite of passage and if your bridge deal isn't flattering (rarely were until recently unless you were a top 10 type player) you can just say you want to jet and get your short list too.
There was a time when an nhl team (any) drafting you then graduating you was an honour and players treated it as such.
Despite it all I still like the guy, which is why it's especially frustrating

Like Brett Hull.... Eric Lindros.... Patrick Roy... Players are likely more loyal now chasing the 8 year extensions.

He was trying to get everyone to just go right to the tunnel and leave the ice right away.
Like no celebration here, let's just get out of here.

This is just an antiquated train of thought.
Tkachuk is a super star. The Flames had the opportunity to lock him in long term, they just would have had to pay fair market value for it. They chose the cost controlled path where they had more bargaining power so they could suppress the short term cost during those RFA years. Hell, the fact that there are even cost controlled years built into the system shows that the system is slanted towards the teams/corporations in the first place.
The Flames literally chose this path. They were the ones who didn't bet big on Tkachuk, so Tkachuk rightfully chose a different path forward.
Loyalty and honour in business? Those are terms corporations have used to minimize the importance of the individual to push a "company first" mindset. Good business is good for both the company and the individual. The idea that "loyalty is a foreign concept with these new kids" outright pisses me off. Loyalty, in the way you're using the term, is supposed to be based on a two way street - and that street was broken by the corporations first. Tkachuk did what's best for him, and that's exactly what he should be doing. I know I'd show no loyalty to a team that used their (systemic) leverage to suppress my earning potential.

Not sure if you’re kidding. I know that was a narrative here, but the clips you see of the Florida room, he seems to be right in there and well received

If he signed an 9x8 instead of that bridge, they slapped the C on him, I bet he woulda stayed.
Johnny too tbh.

Yeah, and if the COVID restrictions were a big part of his decision, as has been speculated, he may have asked for a trade even earlier if he had been locked in for an extra 5 years.

Might be injured. Maybe he was avoiding getting mugged and his teammates let him go.

Agreed, I think the key is having the right pieces and supporting cast,; Something the Flames have struggled with. Maybe with these lengthy interviews they will get it right.
