That's a pretty hot take.
I refereed for 23 years and couldn't disagree with everything you said more.

I'm happy to report your perspective isn't worth a lick.

You have no idea what you are talking about. That assessment is not accurate, at all.

Instead of calling you part of the problem (LOL... like WTF), I'm genuinely interested in why. Outside of the histrionics, Boreal's post didn't seem way offside to me.

I spent a lot of my September and October weekends teaching recertification clinics to kids either starting out or early on in their refereeing journey. HC's focus is absolutely on the grassroots game, especially on the officiating side.
The shadowing program is a recent development (in the past 10 years or so) where a guy like me would get on the ice in a tracksuit to help kids just starting out during their first or second timbits game. Last time I checked, there is no Timbits AAA league in existence, hardly elite hockey.
The big goal for new officials is to get them through the first year and have them come back for a 2nd year. All it takes is one bad experience for those kids to be turned off and never set foot on the ice again.

Why are we talking about officials? Have they been implicated in multiple gang rapes or have a history of toxic culture and behaviour?

Older “officials” are just elite jock sniffers now.
No league wants an official who didn’t at least play junior in some capacity. They want intellect, capacity for critical thought aaand actual “skin in the game”.
So… the days of Don Koharski or Brad Meier in the NHL are gone.
All of the “seasoned officials” who didn’t actually play anywhere are butt hurt to no end.
Thus… the only “official” connection to this story would be to prevent those implicated in sex crimes as a player from being an official.

I was speaking to my direct experience with HC, to refute the other poster's false narrative.

Is hockey culture more toxic than average non-hockey culture in your opinion?

I don't have the yardstick to compare to any other organized team sports, so I don't really have an informed opinion one way or the other.

To clarify, I meant with non-sports culture.

I would say it's prevalent in any culture where the virtues of toxic masculinity are championed.

There are scummy people everywhere. I think this hits home more because Canada lives and breathes hockey.

Many things can be true at the same time.
Hockey Canada can have good grassroots programs for pre-teens.
Priorities can also be completely ####ed up at older ages/elite-level.
