Woke up to interesting results. Osaka is out, her ranking is now 84!
Mannarino and Karatsev are only in the 3rd set, it's 1:15am!

And what a cracker of a match it is! Like boxers trading big blows toe-to-toe.

Karatsev big time fatigued, breathing very heavily now.

I recently watched a video regarding Mannarino's racket and specifically that he strings his Babolat with a ridiculously low tension (something like 24 lbs). How he has any type of control of his shots is mind blowing.

The old French guys are having a great tourney - Monfils, Paire, and Mannarino all still alive and kicking.

That has to be some sort of record for low tension. In the day I had my Dunlop Max 200G strung to 40 lbs to emulate McEnroe and I couldn't hit from the baseline without going long on any shots where you tried to generate pace. I can see why it worked for him with his net play but it leads to a trampoline feeling when swinging through the ball. I don't think any racquet manufacturers these days recommend tensions under 50 lbs.

With the modern game’s super grippy poly strings and extreme western grips, it’s probably a lot easier to spin the ball in than the old days of continental/eastern grips and heavy frying pans.
But yeah 24lbs is ridiculous if true. Maybe it’s easier on the joints and less breaking strings mid-point.

Exactly - Jack Sock uses an extreme western grip and I have heard he strings his rackets in the low 30's. A lot of guys believe it expands the sweet spot as well. I need to get my rackets re-strung and I'm going to give it mid-40's a try as far as string tension is concerned.

Speaking of breaking strings, Opelka popped at least three rackets in his match against Shapo last night.

For all the whining about Nadal having a tough draw, if Shapo wins one more match, Nadal could reach the semis without playing anyone in the top 10.

How amazing would that be. Zverev is gone and then either Rafa or Shapo would be most likely in the AO final.

I just checked the live rankings and Osaka dropped 70 spots from 14 to 84. That has to be the single biggest drop in a day for a perennial top 20 player I can remember.

Well, Kenin also dropped from 11 to 91 this week.

And although Leylah was one and done and Bianca skipped the Aussie Open, they have both risen in the rankings (Leylah to a new career high of #21)

Cornet just told the umpire off. Umpire gave Cienet a time warning after a 9 duece game and thr returner was not ready either.
