Even when Zadorov was stinking the joint out in the early going, Gudbranson was solid. He's been stable from game 1, and weirdly, gels really well with the top line and especially Gaudreau.
I wouldn't do anything crazy, but $2.5 x 3 or 4 would be a good deal for both sides. You lose Zad, who is going to be much more expensive, but that's the way the cookie crumbles. Valimaki and Gudbranson were more than decent in the games they had together.

What are the thoughts on Gudbranson, and if Flames should keep him if he is open to a similar cap hit for next year?
When he had been initially signed, I remember I was a bit confused with the move, especially given the cap hit. He did have a good season on our bottom pairing, and I wouldn’t mind bringing him back for what he brings to the roster.

I wish we had a new thread for these discussions going forward, only because I see the thread get bumped and every time get tricked into thinking it's new news, and not old news.
Maybe just me though.

I hope he's a guy who trades a bit of term for AAV staying low. Good fit for him here, I think. He's a guy who could get a bit better with that added stability.

Gudbranson has to know that he won't look nearly as good on another team not coached by Sutter. It's in his best interests to do what he can to re-sign here. Zadorov is in that boat too, but he's going to be too expensive-plus, EG is much more steady IMO.

I think Gubranson likes it here. I believe it was after hours where he mentioned he’s been moving around a lot recently and would like to find stability at some point. Seemed like he’d be open to staying if the price was right.
Had no issues with Gudbranson all season long, thought he carried his pairing and I’d be open to re-signing Guds to a multi year extension if the price was right and enough cap space was trimmed away.

I’d give him three years at his current $1.95M and be quite content.
Or slightly higher AAV with less term.

I might be OK with giving Gudbranson another year but they really can't afford to give him a raise. I def wouldn't want to give him more than two years. He has to be their sixth or seventh priority and I don't think there'll be much money left for him when the dust settles.
