Ok...so there are some pretty good ideas in the thread on how to fix the Oiler team. Now how do we fix the fanbase?

There was a distinct turn in oiler fans during the fall for hall that they've never been able to recover from. In my opinion they were on the path to recovery back to a disliked but respected rival fanbase...and then they won the McDavid lottery.

Personally I think they need all their toys taken away, Kevin Lowe fired, a new owner, and then the media purge can start. Retire the dusty relics and their poms poms, and promote reason and accountability in the coverage.

No. Not even the unsurpassed genius of the CalgaryPuck collective can save the Edmonton Oilers.

No one can.

No one.

Edmonton is no good.

Why would I care about the Oilers fan base being fixed. They are one of the most arrogant and entitled fanbases in the NHL and its not close.

They are fast to make up excuses
They are quick to create conspiracy
They believe that they're entitled to top draft picks without the organization doing anything to fix the franchise.
They're annoyingly fast to jump on the whole "Bail for the next wonder kid bandwagon
They think their funny and clever
They are like the particularly stupid David Staples in terms of the Tkachuk stuff and beliving in the outright virtue of their players.

Why fix them? hey should suffer, year after year with no playoffs except for an occasional fluke run to refill their arrogance tank. They don't deserve the playoffs because they're so called suffered, they don't deserve another number 1 draft pick for lots of reasons. They do deserve the dread of knowing that their team has been irrelevant and terrible since the mid 90's and when they go to hell where all Oilers go, the only thing on TV will be endless replays of the Smith own goal in slow motion, and a video reel built around McDavid trying to play defense.

There is no fix for that fan base. They are no good.
They have always been self-entitled, obnoxious and delusional. They were never on a path of recovery, because they always felt entitled to top picks and a "return to glory", never with any self-reflection that they were "winning" top picks because they were historically bad at playing the game of hockey.

Unless you count inventing a time machine as a fix and taking away the cups, there is no hope for that fanbase. They are no good.

O.K. there has been a lot of talk on whether or not MacTavish has actually done a good job for us, most fans on this board are very basic in their analysis and I feel would change their opinion entirely if the team was successful.

I just don’t see a scenario where the league lets another franchise player waste away in Edmonton. If the lottery wasn’t rigged before, it absolutely will be this year to make sure the top picks lands in a major market and not pseudo Siberia.

You dont need to. Everyone knows that for every #1 Overall Pick a Cup Win is removed.

Lets look at Ken Hollands handy work so far:

AA (UFA) = 2nd (2020), 2nd (2021)
James Neal (Signed through 2023) = 3rd (2020 or 2021)
Mike Green (UFA) = 4th (2020 or 2021)
Tyler Ennis (UFA) = 5th (2021)
Kassian signed for 4 years 12.8M (3.2 AAV)

So he's traded away 5 picks for players that have made next to no positive impact and given out a terrible contract in his first year.

I'm not surprised the Oilers are losing at all...some people are acting like its some big shock or upset. They are who I though they were

The next analyst to call Mike Smith an “elite puck-moving goaltender” on live television should have their credentials revoked.
This.

They even said it a couple minutes before he gifted the hawks their first goal.

More accurate would be "he's one of the most active goalies with the puck" which would at least be accurate, but more than half the time it causes the team and himself unnecessary grief.

To his credit, he got a 2021 6th round pick for John Marino.... who has quietly put up a really solid rookie year for Pittsburgh.

He's also traded Puljujarvi for nothing, which is better than trading for a cap boat anchor.

I personally think he's done great.

"It's like having a 7th defenceman on the ice!"

Yeah, woohoo. Like having your literal 7th/popcorn eating defenceman on the ice and no goalie when he plays the puck. How thrilling. So valuable.

I won't rain on Smith. Old goalies always hang on too late. Remember when we picked up that Anahiem goalie Hiller AFTER he was washed up. They delude themselves a bit by having a strong stretch sometime during the regular season.

We are lucky, in retrospect, Kipper himself knew very early when his A game was fading and called it a career. Most goalies string it out too long. Clearly Ludquist did the same in NY as just another recent example.

Koskinen will never win anything. Good goalies don't throw themselves right out of the net off to one side...ever and he did it a couple of times.
