Scoring Winger

Bennett needs to shed a couple pounds and be a bit faster. I feel like he would benefit if he also changed every piece of his equipment. who knows

We should trade for Kovy and stick him on the PP2. Would give us two lethal RH shots with him and Lindholm

Not going to happen, we could've signed him for nothing a month ago.

What's crazy is how much has changed with him since he landed in Montreal.
Nobody wanted the guy being scratched by the Kings.
Someone is going to pay for the productive player the Canadiens have now. They won't pay a whole lot, but they'll pay something.

I highly doubt it. Giving up assets for a guy you could've had for free a month ago doesn't look good... on top of that, he's a huge risk - payed terribly in LA, looks good in MTL. Not a move I would ever make if I were a GM.

Huge risk like a 4th or 5th round draft pick for a position we are desperately short RH shots @ PP and if you play like garbage you get sat and your gone at the end of the year.
Franchise crippling.

Also his cap hit is minuscule. Doesn't work out? Waive him and he goes home. Not suggesting the Flames are the ones who will go for it but I do think someone will.
I'll bet Kovalchuk is kicking himself, wishing he signed in Montreal when he came back rather than L.A.
Johnathan Davis did an interview either on 960 or NHL Network the other day (can't recall where I heard it) about the gong show that went on in L.A. when he signed there. How misused he was. Interesting stuff.

Fair enough. Huge risk was probably a bit much - I still wouldn't do it.

If Kovy continues to score, someone will give up a 2nd round pick for him.

Only teams I can see potentially paying that are the Blues, Caps, Pena, Lightning, Bruins. Basically teams locked at the top of the standings.

That's 5 teams LOL. I'm guessing at least one will do that.

I didn’t discount what you said just thinking if that is the price the top end teams would likely be the market

My money is on Dallas.
I could also see NYI, CBJ, EDM, NAS, ARI, or VEG.
I could see MTL wanting a long-shot prospect or fringe player of some sort more than a pick...they've already got two 2nd rounders this year and 11 picks in total.
Or a 2022 2nd rounder...always a chance it's in the low 30s and they've just got their own 7 picks so far that year.

I know as Calgary fans we’ve seldom seen this, but you can’t have too many picks.
It would be like having too much money.

I'd always take more than less, but the very best bet is lots that are evenly distributed over a few years. Despite Calgary's relative dearth of picks, we've still managed to run into logjams at LW and LD, and one could argue that it isn't optimal for the development of players like Mangiapane and Bennett. Contract limits are also a thing.
I think it's more middling teams that would want Kovalchuk...the very best teams don't necessarily need to waste a roster spot on a one dimensional scorer. Though he could be appealing for any team that's right up against the cap.
There's a lot of benefit to having future picks in your cupboards...not sure if anyone's holding picks from LA, SJ, or CHI, but they're looking far more valuable now than a few years ago. Picks are also generally the best sweetener in a deal (no cap or contract limit implications).

If recent history is any indication... we really should be hanging onto those late round 6th and 7th rounders and not casting them aside in minor trades.

I liked your questions, so thought I would look it up.
LA has all their picks.
Chicago traded a 2nd and 3rd for Shaw.
SJ traded a first plus for Karlsson.
Chicago actually is playing better this year than last.
The SJ pick could end up being Lafrenier.

Kovy at $700k for a few months is a lot different than Kovy for another year at $6M.
